Do not merge with Henry Knowles of Portsmouth without discussion. See below.
18 April 1635, embarked on the Susan and Ellen, Ralph Hudson, his wife and three children, and five servants including Henry Knowles age 25.[1][2]
Ralph Hudson died towards the end of 1638 or beginning of 1639. His will made bequests to two of the servants who sailed with him on the Susan and Ellen. No bequests were made to the other three, including Henry. This would indicate that Henry had left the employ of Hudson.[2]
Secondary sources have assumed that this Henry Knowles is the same man who appeared in Portsmouth, Rhode Island before 1643. Where was he in the intervening years from before 1638 until 1643?[2]
Anderson concludes: "We do not see sufficient evidence to state that the 1635 passenger was the Henry Knowles of Portsmouth and his family.[2]
