Biography

The daughter of Edwin Lair and Margaret (Weatherwax) Lair, Bettie was born in Woodstock Township in 1862.[1][2] A marriage record indicates that Bettie married Charles Smith (1849-) in Napoleon, Michigan on September 21, 1881.[3] Her sister, Mattie, was a witness at the wedding. Bettie had two children with Charles Smith, both of whom went by their mother's last name, Bertha M. Lair, born in 1882, and Edward "Eddie" June Lair, born in 1884.

Bettie married again, marrying Charles E. Emery (1861-1932) in Woodstock in 1891. In 1900, both of her children lived in Woodstock with her widowed mother. In 1910, Her mother and two brothers, John and Eddie, lived with Bettie and Charles on the farm in Woodstock; Charles had become head of household. Her son, Eddie, lived there, with his half-siblings. His stepfather was a farmer and Eddie and his oldest half-brother "worked out" as farm laborers.[4] Bettie and Charles had at least three children who lived past infancy, all of whom lived in the household in 1910:

  1. Stephen Douglas Emery (1893-1976)
  2. Peter William Emery (1895-1910)
  3. Neva G. (Emery) Babcock (1897-1988)

Her son, Peter died at the age of 15 and Bettie noted to the census enumerator that she had born nine children, seven of whom were living, not including Peter, who died later that year. Bettie passed away from Bright's Disease at the age of 68[5] and is buried at Briggs Cemetery in Cement City, Michigan.[6]
