Biography

The daughter of Edwin Lair and Margaret (Weatherwax) Lair, Matie was born in Woodstock Township in 1874.^[1] She married Edward W. Watson (1873-), the son of Albert Watson and Jenette Peck, in Adrian, Michigan on March 30, 1899.^[2] In 1900, they lived with Matie's mother and brothers in Woodstock.^[3] They had two children together:

1. Marian J. (Watson) DeCamp (1901-1967)
2. Marvin G. Watson (1900-)

In 1920, the couple lived together in Jackson, Michigan, while Edward worked as a car repairer at the railroad shop, even though they had filed for divorce the previous year. They took in three boarders, all males in the 20s.^[4] The divorce action, filed in Adrian on January 13, 1919, was discontinued.^[5] In 1930, Matie and Edward lived with Matie's brother, Edwin, a widower, who lived with his son and worked as a sweeper at a horn factory. Matie's husband did not work at the time the census was enumerated. Matie's daughter, Marian, and her husband, Harry DeCamp, lived in the household, and Harry worked as a driver for a paving construction company.^[6] Matie had the same living arrangement and household members in 1940, except that her brother's son was the only one in the household who worked. ^[7]

Widowed, Matie passed away in Mason, Michigan at the age of 72.^[8]
