Henry was born 15 Oct 1840 at Ballyduff, County Waterford, Ireland, the second son of Henry Langley of Ballyduff and Isabella Edwards Archdall. [1] According to the Victorian Death Index he is the son of Henry (sen.), and Isabella (nee Archdale) Langley, but other records suggest that the correct spelling is Archdall.
Move to Australia
Henry with his parents and siblings (including John Douse Langley) emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1853. From 1853-1859, Henry worked in a merchant's office. He was an active member of St Barnabas' church, was in charge of the Sunday school, and preached in the open air. [2]

He married Elizabeth Mary Strachan in 1867 at Bathurst [3].

Henry Archdall Langley was an Anglical clergyman and the first Anglican Bishop of Bendigo, and served in a number of important Victorian appointments.
In 1860 he was accepted as a candidate for the ministry by Bishop Barker, who appointed him as a lay reader in charge of the Kurrajong district. Henry trained at Moore College, 1960-65
He was ordained deacon 11 June 1865 and priest 27 May 1866
He was curate at All Saints', Bathurst 1865-7, incumbent of Holy Trinity, Orange 1867-9 and curate of St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney 1870.
He ministered at St Mary's, Balmain from 1870-5, and, at the express wish of Dean Cowper, became locum tenens of the cathedral during the Dean's absence on leave in England in 1876.
His last appointment in NSW was as the incumbent of St Matthew's, Windsor 1877-8.
He served as vicar of St Matthew's Prahran, in Melbourne, 1878-90
He was appointed archdeacon of Gippsland, 1890-95
Then archdeacon of Melbourne and Geelong, 1894 until 1902.
He was appointed as first bishop of the newly-formed diocese of Bendigo, Langley was consecrated in St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, on 24 Feb 1902 and enthroned at All Saints' Pro-Cathedral on 5 March 1902
He died of a stroke in 1906. At the impressive funeral which took place on Tuesday 7 Aug at All Saints' Pro-Cathedral. He was succeeded by his elder brother, John Douse Langley (q.v.), who became the second bishop of Bendigo.[6]
Death and burial
He died 5 August, 1906[7], at his residence, 'Bishopscourt,' White Hills (now part of Greater Bendigo)[8][9][10].
Aged 65 years, survived by whis wife, Elizabeth Mary, "a constant companion and help throughout the whole of his ministry and their family." [11]
He buried in the Bendigo General Cemetery where a large obelisk marked his grave (still present 1991). [12]

Melbourne, on 14th , November, a tablet in memory of his brother, the late Right Rev. Henry A. Langley, his predecessor, in the Bendigo episcopate. The memento. composed of white marble with Oamaru facings, was erected, in the chancel facing the organ. It was subscribed by the parishioners, who were
under the late bishop's ministration from 1873 to 1896. In performing the ceremony Bishop Langley tendered to the congregation the grateful appreciation , of Mrs. Langley. his sister, himself, and members of their family for the beautiful token of their affection for his late brother. Entering the pulpit, he preached an appropriate sermon.[13]
