Biography

Birth and Origins

William was born in 1875. He was the son of Henry Archball Langley and Elizabeth Mary Strachan [1]

Marriage and Family

He married Effie Love Tress in 1 Jul1899.

"The marriage of the Rev. Leslie Langley, third son of Archdeacon Langley, and Miss Effie Tress, second daughter of the Rev. T. B. Tress, of Richmond, was celebrated in St. Stephen's, Richmond, on June 28. The Bishop of Melbourne and Archdeacon Langley officiated. ... The bridesmaids were Misses Aurie, Marie, and Kitty Tress, and Misses Hilda and Ruth Langley." [2]

They had children:

Church Appointments

Following an appointment at St. Phiillip's Church, Collingwood, Melbourne, Rev William Langley was appointed rector at St Stephens, Newtown, Sydney in 1907 [9]

He was commissioned as Archdeacon of Cumberland in St. Andrew's Cathedral by the Archbishop of Sydney as Archdeacon in May 1934 [10]

Death

Canon William Langley died in Sydney, 14 Jul 1952.

"Canon Langley Dies In Sydney SYDNEY, Sun. - Archdeacon William Leslie Langley, Canon of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, since 1921, died today. He was 77." [11]

"Archdeacon Langley Dies SYDNEY, Sunday - Archdeacon William Leslie Langley, Canon of St. Andrew's Cathedral since 1921, died in Sydney today. Canon Langley was 77. He was chaplain to the Archbishop of Sydney between 1915 and 1933, and Archdeacon of Cumberland from 1934 to 1942.

After a service at All Saints Church, Woollahra, at 2 p.m. tomorrow, he will be cremated at Northern Suburbs Crematorium." [12]

Archdeacon dies, 77
Archdeaco' W. L. Langley, 77, former Archdeacon of Cumberland, and Canon of St. Andrew's Cathedral, died in a Killara private hospital yesterday.
He was a son of the late Bishop Henry Langley of Bendigo.
Archdeacon Langley's uncle was also Bishop of Bendigo.
Archdeacon Langley was Vicar of St. Philips Collingwood, and St. Stephen's, Newtown, and the first rector of All Saints', Woollahra, from 1914 to 1942.
Retired
He has been in retirement for 10 years.
He has left three sons, Dr Alan Langley, Mr, Thomas Langley, a Sydney solicitor, and Mr. Brian, Langley.
The rector of All Saints', Woollahra, the Rev. G. A. Conolly, who succeeded Archdeacon Langley, will conduct the service at All Saints' today at 2 p.m.
The Primate of Australia. (Dr. Mowll) will preach the sermon and the funeral will leave for the Northern Suburbs Crematorium.[13]
