Fletcher Lapham was born in Oct 1833, the son of Jonathan Lapham (1798-1860) & Elizabeth Shoffield Healey (1796-1877). Fletcher married Mary Kelly. [1]

The 1850 census for Glens Falls, Warren, New York lists:

Jonathan Lapham M 52 New York,
Elisabeth L Lapham F 52 Rhode Island
Fletcher Lapham M 16 New York
Amelia Nealey (Healey?) F 15 New York[2]

The preceding family is that of their son Jerome, son Benjamin's family is on the preceding page.

IN 1855 Fletcher Lapham, 22, Mary, 20, and "Clawed", 1, are boarding with the Darlings in Queensbury, Warren County, New York. Fletcher and Claude were born in Warren County, Mary in Montgomery. The preceding family is that of Fletcher's parents Jonathan & Elizabeth. Note the census is mislabeled "New Hampshire".[3]

The 1860 census for Warren is dated 26 July, Jonathan died in May:

Mrs Lapham F 60 New York (sic)
Flecher (sic) Lapham M 27 Carpenter New York
Jane Lapham F 24 New York
George Lapham M 8 New York[4]

I haven't figured out who Jane & George are or where Mary & Claude are - unless they were Mary Jane and Claude George, the ages are off a bit though.

Fletcher Lapham served as a Musician in the 22nd Regiment, New York Infantry Company E during the Civil War.[5][6]

From New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center 22nd New York Infantry Regiment's Civil War Newspaper Clippings:

"ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Va., Aug. 27, 1861."
"On Monday Theodore Reynolds and Fletcher Lapham, while scouting, were fired upon; Reynolds was shot through the chest below the collar bone, Fletcher shot the Rebel and the two retreated..."
"CAMP GRAHAM, ARLINGTON, VA., Tuesday Evening, August 27th, 1861."
" A continued interchange of fire was kept up yesterday between our scouts and the rebel patrols, and if all accounts are true which our boys tell, some 15 or 20 of the enemy fell before their shots.—FLETCHER LAPHAM thinks he killed one; G. H. Morse of my company says he is sure he killed one,.."[7]

There is a pension record dated 29 Jan 1890 in the name of Fletcher Lapham listing his service as "E, 22, N. Y. Inf" and his beneficiary as Josephine Lapham, widow.[8] There is another dated 31 Jul 1891 at Family Search but he image is only of a cover sheet recording his name, rank, and unit. There is no additional detail.[9]The one dated 29 Jan 1890 is also available at Fold3 - behind their paywall.[10]

Claude's obituary in 1938 states his mother died when he was 9, which would have been c 1863. They became travelling musicians and entertainers. They settled in East Berlin Pennsylvania "more than 65 years ago" ie before 1873, where Fletcher married Josephine Wolf.[11] News Comet East Berlin, Pennsylvania Fri, Oct 7, 1938
