Biography

Benjamin Lapham (son of John, son of John, son of John) was born 15 Mar 1727; son of John and Desire (Howland) Lapham of Dartmouth, Mass[1]

There is a question about his wife. Aldrigde states she was Lydia Page, who died May 26, 1751[2] This appears to be conflated information. The Rhode Island records show Lydia Lapham, wife of Benjamin died on that date, however this wasLydia Ballou., who married Benjamin Lapham, the son of John Lapham and Mary Russell, and his wife. Rhode Island records[3] show their children were James (who died young), Mary (who survived) and Lydia (who died young). This Benjamin did not die in 1751, but remarried, as show in his WT profile.

The Dutchess New York records show Benjamin Lapham, son of John Lapham and Desire Howland married Margaret Page, the daughter of John Page and his second wife, Sarah Clark[4]. This source is aligned with Aldrige in other respects: As a Quaker, Benjamin refused to swear any oath of allegiance and was confined on Long Island and in Poughkeepsie on suspcion of disloyalty. The old homestead was at Nine Partners, N. Y. Benjamin's father, John, was one of the original Nine Partners. Benjamin and his sons appear on various deeds and other records in this region.

Benjamin and Margaret's children included:

  1. Solon, born 1746; died 16 Feb 1832 ; his first wife was unknown to the author of Laphams in America; he married (2) July 1813, Rachel Sherwood. He had 13 children. The census of 1790 lists Solon living in Washington Co.
  2. Mary, born 1748; married Edward Pugsley. At some point they lived in Egypt, N. Y. They had four children Rachel, Margaret, Judah and Sarah Pugsley.
  3. Pazzi, born 22 Oct 1750, died in 1795. He married Bethany Foster of Dutchess Co., N. Y. The 1790 census iists Pazzi living in Albany Co., N. Y.
  4. Ludy, who married Reuben Stanton. They had children daughter Orpha and son Reuben. Aunt Ludy and Aunt Mary brought up Fayette Lapham, his mother having died while he was an infant. Fayette was Pazzi's son.
  5. Judah, who married Benjamin Palmer and had daughters: Joanna, Desire, Orpha, Tracey, and Sarah.

Benjamin Lapham died before 1810, when his widow Margaret wrote her will, which was proved in 1812.
