Biography

Mary at the tender age of ten years was employed as a nurse in a household where there was a young baby needing care. I am not adding the name of the employer; however, the Supreme Court case inquiring into the man slaughter of the baby was published in Brisbane newspapers. It was unfortunate for Mary, for she had only been employed for one week.

Mary was born in Queensland Australia a few years after the arrival of her parents in the ship "Lobelia", in July 1865. Born in 1869 Mary was the daughter of Reuben Lax and Eliza Harris. Her occupation as nurse would not have been something new; for her mother had a number of children who also needed care.

Twelve children were born to Mary and her husband Thomas Parkins or Parkings but prior to marriage she had two children; Robert William Lax born 5 July 1886 was the first son, he was taken into the Millar fold.

The second son was Herbert Lax he was born 9 August 1887 and died on 29 September 1887 he was buried in a public grave at Toowong Cemetery Reference portion 18 section 19 grave 7.

The cost for this infant's funeral organised by K.M. Smith Undertakers, was revealed as 3 pounds 15 shillings, the deposit needed was 15 shillings. That would have been a considerable amount of money to find in 1887.

Mary Ann Lax and Thomas Parkin or Parkings married in 1889 and raised their thirteen children named:-William Robert Lax or Millar, born to unknown; the following twelve are all named Millar; Ernest Rowley, Thomas Reuben, Henry Harris known as Harris, Percy Norman, Ernest Albert, Eliza Maud, Daniel Rowley, Gladys Daisy, Mary Ann Irene, Gertrude known as Trudy, Edward George and Charles Godffrey.

They are buried together at Toowong Cemetery.

Parent's names on death record are Reuben Lax and Elizabeth Harris.
