Biography

Margaret was born in 1790 in Middlesex, the daughter of George Leighton and Abigail (Egleton) Leighton. Her date and place of birth were shown in the 1861 Census. Her parents are listed in a footnote in Volume 1 of Faraday's letters.[1]

In 1814 her future brother in law, Michael Faraday wrote to a friend saying how much in love Robert was with Margaret.[2]

Margaret married Robert Faraday on the 5th February 1815 at Marylebone, Middlesex.[3]

Their marriage is listed on London Sandemanian Marriages and other links between church members. There were about 70 marriages between the families of the London Sandemanian's of which this was one.

On 14th March 1826 her sister in law, Margaret Faraday (1802-1862) and John Barnard (1797-1880) got married. The event was described by Charlotte Barnard (1805-1866), the sister to the bridegroom in a letter to her sister Elizabeth (Barnard) Reid (1794-1870). Both families were members of the Sandemanian church in London. Margaret and Robert both attended the wedding.

The letter has been published and includes details of the day of the marriage, naming numerous Sandemanians who were involved[4] See John Barnard's profile for details.

1851 Census on the 30th March 1851 Margaret a widow and a gas fitter, was living in Albert Street, St Pancras, Middlesex with her daughters Elizabeth Faraday and Margaret (Faraday) Leighton, and Margaret's husband George Leighton. Two servants were also living there.[5]

1861 Census on the 7th April 1861 Margaret was living in Montague Road, Croydon, Surrey with her daughter Abigail and Abigail's husband George Sandeman, and their children Frederick, Margaret, George, Agnes, Eve, Alfred, Michael and Walter. Margaret's daughter Elizabeth was also living there.[6]

Margaret died aged 78 in 1868 in Hampstead, Middlesex.[7]
