Biography

Lewis Lewis, son of William Lewis and Ann Evans, was born before 1686 [1] perhaps on 2 November 1674 [2] [3] [4] in Eglwysilan, Glamorganshire, Wales, and was baptised there at the parish church of Saint Ilan. [5] [6]

Lewis wed Mary Powell on 13 December 1700 at the Rednon Monthly Meeting in Media, Chester county, Pennsylvania. [7] [8] [9] Their marriage intention was declared on 13 October 1700, [10] and again on 28 November 1700 at the Ablington monthly meeting in Montgomery, Pennsylvania. [11] Mary was born in 1678 in Bristol, Bucks county, Pennsylvania. Lewis and Mary had the following children, according to the various sources indicated:

  1. ANN LEWIS, b. 2 Oct 1701, m. JAMES MASSEY; [12][13]
  2. Phineas Lewis, b. 29 Apr 1703, m. Rachel Perkins; [14][15]
  3. David Lewis, b. 29 Jun 1705, d. 1794, m. Jane Lawrence; [16][17]
  4. Lydia Lewis, b. 5 Feb 1709, m. William Garrett; [18][19]
  5. Lewis Lewis, b. 20 Mar 1710, m. Rose Pratt; [20][21]
  6. Deborah Lewis, b. 1712, m. John Hibberd; [22]
  7. Jabez Lewis, b. 6 Feb 1714, m. Hannah Garrett; [23][24]
  8. Mary Lewis, b. 1717, m. Jasher Roberts; [25]
  9. Agnes Lewis, b. 15 Dec 1720, m. Isaac Garrett.[26][27]
  10. Elizabeth Lewis, b. 1723, m. Amos Evans. [28]

Lewis Lewis was named executor in his brother Evan Lewis' last will and testament, dated 1735. [29]

Lewis' wife Mary Powell died in October 1740 and was buried in Newton, Chester, Pennsylvania. Lewis Lewis followed her in death before 15 September 1757, date of probation of his Last Will and Testament, in Newtown, Chester county, Pennsylvania.

Research Notes on Death Record which contradicts Date of Probated Will

There is a Quaker Meeting Death Record for a Lewis Lewis, son of Abraham and Ann Lewis, who died on the 7th Day of the Fourth Month 1758 in Chester (now Delaware) county, Pennsylvania, who was buried at Haverford New Meeting Graveyard. [30] [31] However, the Lewis Lewis of this profile is the son of William and Ann Lewis. Moreover, the Lewis Lewis of this profile left a Will dated the 18th day of the second month in the year of our Lord 1747 (which, before the Calender Change, was 18 Apr 1747, not 18 Feb 1747) at Newtown, Chester county, Province of Pennsylvania, which was probated on 15 September 1757 in Chester county, Pennsylvania. In the probate part of the record, Lewis Lewis is referred to as the Deceased. Therefore Lewis must have died before 15 September 1757. [32] The above facts contradict the Quaker Meeting Record above, which gives 7 April 1758 as the date of death of Lewis Lewis. It must be concluded therefore, that there were two men called Lewis Lewis living in Pennsylvania at the same time.

Geographical Note

Newtown Township is a township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States; however, prior to 1789 it was part of Chester County. [33] Not to be confused with Newtown in Bucks county, Pennsylvania. [34]

Calender Change

The calender change in England and Ireland took place on 2nd of September 1752, making it the 14th of September (NS) rather than the 2nd (OS). It was only the following year 1st of January 1753 that year began on the 1st of January. Scotland made the change in 1600.
