Biography

William, son of John Lewis and Sarah Unknown,[1] was probably born in 1660 at Henrico (now Goochland) County, Virginia.[2] A deposition by William dated 1679 stated that he was 19 years old.[1] He died on 25 Dec 1706 at Henrico County, VA.[1] His noncupative will was proved on 1 May 1707 and granted administration to Elizabeth Lewis, his relict. George Payne and Elizabeth Johnson gave oath that (quote): "said will or writing, expressed, were declared and publicly spoken by the said William Lewis in their presence and hearing the day before his death."[1][3]

He married Elizabeth WOODSON, daughter of Robert WOODSON and Elizabeth FERRIS, in 1682 at Henrico County, VA; and was called brother-in-law by Robert Woodson Jr on 1 Dec 1689.[1][4]

A deposition by William dated 1 Aug 1689 at Henrico County, VA, stated that he was age 28. He was called son William by the inventory of John LEWIS of Henrico's estate taken 2 Dec 1689.[1][5]

William LEWIS Sr held the plantation where he lived, 100 acres purchased from William Porter Jr, 100 acres on the north side of Whiteoak Swamp, and 200 acres upon a place called the Runs with a parcel in Whiteoad Swamp and Deep Run.[1] In Apr 1705, William was listed on the Henrico County quit rent rolls with 350 acres.

Will: 24 December, 1706: Nunc. wil of Wm. Lewis: Home plantation - 100 acres purchased of Wm Porter Jr and 100 acres on N. side of White Oak Swp to eldest son John. 200 acres on Three Run and a parcel on White Oak Swp & Deep Run to be divided between them, to sons William and Joseph. All residue of estate to wife...presented by Eliz. Lewis, relict of the deceased William Lewis. Proved by Geo. Payne and Eliz. Johnson to be words spoken by said William Lewis the day before he died. Recorded 1 May 1707. Henrico County.[3][6]

Research Notes

No daughters were mentioned in William's will, but some sources include Sarah and Mourning wife of Robert ADAMS. Sarah may have been posthumous, but no record names Mourning who was supposedly older than Joseph.[7]

What is the evidence for Mourning, Sarah, Zachary and Jane? Is it possible that these children belong to another Lewis family?
