Emily Lincecum, the daughter of Hezekiah Lincecum and Sally Hickman was born June 16, 1813 in Eatonton, Putnam Georgia. She married Daniel Boone Moore at the age of 17 on July 16, 1830. Emily and Daniel had at least ten children.
Emily moved with her family from Georgia to Mississippi before 1830. They was among the first white settlers in the Choctaw Nation.
Emily was the sister of Dr. Gideon Lincecum, an Internationally famous Botanist and resident of Long Point, Texas. She was the second cousin of James Bowie one of the heroes of the Alamo. Her grandmother Miriam Bowie Lincecum was the sister of James Bowie grandfather, of James Bowie of the Battle of the Alamo.
Emily and Daniel moved their family from Mississippi In 1851. They first moved to Long Point, TX then to Caldwell Co. They finally settled in Medina County Texas in 1855. By this time Daniel had given up the farming of cotton and became a cattle raiser.
The Comanche Indians were still raiding Medina County Texas in the 1850’s and 1860’s. Emily lived under the constant threat of an Indian attack. The Comanche attacked her son-in-law, Peter Ketchum, husband of Sarah Eleonora. They killed him, scalped him and cut his nose off.
Given the location of their new home, it’s perhaps only natural that Daniel Moore and his son Alonzo became well known Indian fighters. A historical marker near the Moore Family Cemetery in Devine, Texas records their exploits.
Emily died in 1894 and is buried near Devine, Medina Co Texas in the Moore Family Cemetery.
