He was born on 09 Mar 1763 in County Antrim, Ireland [1] and his parents were Daniel LONG and Susanna Murdough or Murdock.
About July 1763 while just a few months old, he emigrated from Ireland with his parents to Pennsylvania. [1]
About 1765 they moved from Pennsylvania to South Carolina where his father Daniel was to receive a land grant. Unfortunately Daniel soon died about 1767 before being able to complete the land grant arrangements. [1]
No record of this land grant has yet been located, however, on the platt for land granted in 1771 to one Jacob Jones, near Duncan Creek Presbyterian Church, the adjoining land was shown as belonging to Daniel Long. Deed Book-F p510 shows sale of the Jones land in 1797 and the deed mentions that the adjoining land is "laid out for Daniel Long, deceased".
During the American Revolutionary War he served as a soldier in the military. [1]
Private Robert Long made statements in support of the pension of Captain Samuel Hammond's Pension application. He said that Hammond was in the Battle of Cowpens (that is Tarleton's defeat) and the deponent (Long ) was in the center right wing of Captain Ewing's Company under Col. Joseph Hayes next to Howard's Company. (John Eager Howard). Proving he himself was in the Battle of Cowpens, he did not include that information in his own pension application.
