Research Notes

  1. Alice was born in Salem New Jersey, the actual date varies with source however the range is fairly narrow (1722-1728) Alice's family are thought to be Quakers and Salem New Jersey was an early Quaker settlement, A search of the Quaker meetings is NJ is in order.
  2. Location of date and marriage. (care must be taken with dates: The Julian Calendar was replaced by the Gregorian Calendar, changing the formula for calculating leap years. The beginning of the legal new year was moved from March 25 to January 1. Finally, 11 days were dropped from the month of September 1752. (The following dates are as given on original doc)
    1. Quaker documentation marriage[5] First intentions: Hopewell Monthly Meeting, 4th day of the 2nd month of 1748, or 4 Apr 1748; Second intentions: Hopewell Monthly Meeting, 2nd day of third month of 1748 or 2 May 1748.
    2. 4 Jul 1748 in Christine, Cheshire, Pennsylvania,[4]
    3. ltm (leave to marry) 2 May 1748 Frederick Co, Virginia [6]
    4. According to Quaker records, the marriage took place under the auspices of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Frederick Co, Virginia. Until other information appears I will choose Frederick Va over Cheshire, Pa.
  3. Date and location of death:
    1. Died after 1777 in either North or South Carolina[1]
    2. Died before 1777 in North Carolina [3]
    3. Died circa 1777 North Carolina[4]
    4. She passed away about 1777. North Carolina, USA [7]
  4. Much of the information given in the werelate.org website is not verifiable. I have included it for completeness. I only use it as a source if no other source exists. (Jaffé-99)

Includes NotesNotes for Alice Lowden: Alice Lowden married William Hiatt sometime in July of 1948. He had been previously married and had five children by a previous marriage. He died about 1767 in Frederick Co. Va. and she was remarried to John Thomas. They evidently married outside the Hopewell Mo Mtg of the Quakers and were disowned for marriage by a hireling teacher. Later they gave satisfaction for such an indiscretion and were granted a certificate to New Garden Mo Mtg. Guilford Co. N. Carolina. John Thomas died on Nov. 13, 1781. Although this particular Thomas family does not enter into our own geneological tree, the Thomas family was prominent in the early Quakers with branches in almost every Monthly Meeting that I have seen, and one branch at the Newton Meeting in Chester Co. Penn. was in our direct lineage. Sarah Thomas, the daughter of Peter Thomas and Elizabeth (Goodwin) Thomas, was the mother of Christian Vore, our second male ancestor on this continent. The name appears in our family again as Martha Thomas, wife of Isaac Hiatt. As yet I have been unable to trace the exact lines of the Thomas family in our family. There are numerous genealogical studies of other branches, some of which will probably interlink.

Louden-815 and Lowdon-1 are not ready to be merged because: These two Alice's are the same person. There are numerous spellings of Louden/Lowden/Lowdon and even occasionally London. The parents are the same. While birthdates differ, neither date is documented. Husbands are also the same.

I am in the process for researching the family of Renier Louden. Alice is his daughter and will be my next target. (She is also my sixth great-grandmother.)

Marie, Brent, Homer, Thomas...removed previous merges and set up a merge for (Lawden-3) and (Lowdon-1). Both profiles appear to be for the same person. Thanks.

Brent...added sources in the biography. Looks like surname is spelled Lowden and Alice was born much later in 1728. Please take a good look at this profile and see if you agree with changes. Thanks.
