Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Richard Luttrell Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

Richard Luttrell was born in 1735 in Westmoreland County, Virginia Colony.[1] His parents were John Luttrell and Frances Sanford. He died on November 11, 1790 in Amherst, Virginia, United States

He married Sarah Churchwell in 1754 Together they had 7 children:

  1. John Luttrell
  2. Richard Luttrell
  3. James Luttrell
  4. Hannah Luttrell
  5. Mary Luttrell
  6. Susannah Luttrell
  7. William Luttrell

About 1764 the family moved to a farm near Rockfish Creek, Amherst County, Virginia.

Richard Luttrell and his sons, James and Richard, Jr., served in the Revolutionary War. Richard, Sr., served in the Virginia Troops under the command of General George Rogers Clark in the Illinois Campaign. James served as a minute man in the Virginia militia in 1780 and 1781. On May 8, 1781 Richard Jr. enlisted at the age of 18. He served in South Carolina in the Third Regiment of Light Dragoons.

(The land conquered from the British in this campaign became the Northwest Territory and later formed the state of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota.)

For his service, Richard was given a grant of 108 acres of land in the present state of Illinois. In July of 1789 Richard sold this 108 acres of land. There is no evidence that he ever occupied the land.

Amherst County land records show his continued presence in Virginia in the years 1787, 1788, and 1794.[2][3]

Richard and his wife remained in Amherst County until death. Richard Luttrell was a farmer throughout his life.

Research Notes

Richard Luttrell's brother, John Luttrell, was a Lt. Col.in the war, serving in the North Carolina Continental Line. He was killed by Tories in 1781. Before his war service John had explored much of what is now eastern TN and KY.

In 1775 John acquired title to large tracts of land as one of the nine partners in the Louisa Company. The land acquired was "all south of the Kentucky River, beginning at the mouth or junction of said river with the Ohio to its source, thence south into Tennessee, until a westwardly line should cross the Cumberland Mountain so as to strike the Ridge which divides the waters of the Tennessee River from those of the Cumberland, and with that ridge to the Ohio River, and with that river to the mouth of the Kentucky River aforesaid". This included a large portion of the present states of Tennessee and Kentucky. Later the state of North Carolina, in which the land was at that time included, allowed the partners 200,000 acres in lieu of the territory claimed.

In a deed of gift dated October 20 1795, and recorded October 9 1799, Richard Luttrell granted to his son James Luttrell his one-half interest in the estate belonging to Colonel John Luttrell. Richard believed that he was an heir to half of the estate as he was one of the two surviving brothers of Colonel John Luttrell, who had no children.

The estate was finally settled in Knox County in 1798 after much litigation and with the claim divided among various litigants. Included in the assets were 190,000 acres of land on the Ohio River.
