Biography

William was born in 1886.

In 1901, William, age 14, was working as a shoemaker in a factory in Toronto. He was living with his parents and siblings in East Toronto. [1][2]

On 29 June 1921, William Arthur MacDonald, a Butcher and already widowed, married Elizabeth Gertrude Purdy in Toronto, Canada. The marriage was conducted by a Baptist minister, although earlier censuses listed the MacDonalds as Methodists. William was living on Leslie Street in Toronto, at the time. On this document, William's parents are listed as James A. MacDonald and Catherine J. Lawson; however, the handwriting is not his -- his signature is on the bottom right. One of the witnesses was Raymond C. MacDonald of Pape Avenue, the name of one of William's younger brothers. [3]

Bill was a champion boxer for the early Toronto Fire Department.

In 1931, Wm, age 45, was renting a house at 190 Carlaw Avenue in Toronto with his wife Elizabeth and his children that match the names in the connected profiles. Also living with the family was his father James McDonald, age given as 82 and retired.[4]

William Arthur passed away at East General Hospital, Toronto, Canada on August 8, 1961 according to his obituary in the Toronto Globe & Mail.

William was working as a Teamster when he married Christina Jones in 1909. They appear to have had two children: Viola Matilda in March 1910 and James Charles Alexander in 1911. Viola is in the 1911 Canada Census, but James was born late in that year.
