Biography

Mary was the daughter of David Maple and Mary Johnson.[1]
Mary's family was mentioned in "History of the Upper Ohio Valley", in a biography of her son, William Johnson:[2]
"William Johnson, one of the oldest living residents of Columbiana county, was born in Pennsylvania, September 21, 1801, and is the son of Thomas and Mary (Mapele) Johnson, who were natives of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, respectively. When he was two years of age his father was drowned, after which sad event the mother with her family, accompanied by her father's family, came to Ohio, and settled near Amsterdam, on the head waters of Yellow creek, where the grandfather entered a quarter-section of land, upon which they all lived for a time. Misfortunes overtaking the land, having fallen into other hands, the family afterward settled near Hammondsville, and from thence settled on a tract near Summerset, which they leased, and upon which they lived for some years. The family was here divided, the mother removing to a farm on Yellow creek, where, in October, 1826, William was married to Sarah Yeagley, a resident of that neighborhood, where they lived about ten or twelve years."
Based on the birth year of William Johnson, it is estimated that Mary was born no later than 1785. If she was born in New Jersey, as this biography states, Mary was probably born no later than about 1782, when her father appears to have left New Jersey.

Mary was enumerated in Jefferson County, Ohio in 1820, living next to her brother David Maple Jr:
1820 US Census - Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio:[3]
Mary Johnston - Males: 2 (16<26), 1 (16-18); Females: 1 (26<45), 1 (10<16)

It is not clear what became of Mary after this. There are several records that may or may not pertain to her:
In 1830, a Mary Johnston was enumerated in Clinton Township, where David Maple Jr lived:[4]
1830 US Census - Clinton Township, Jefferson County, Ohio:
Mary Johnston - Males: 1 (15<20), 2 (10<15), 2 (5<10), 1 (<5);
Females: 1 (40<50), 1 (10<15)
This family was enumerated 20 households away from David Maple, and the family does not bear an obvious resemblance to the Mary's family as recorded in 1820.
A Mary Johnston died in Knox Township in 1832.
On 31 October 1832, the estate of a Mary Johnston, deceased, of Knox Township was inventoried. The record names her heirs as : James Johnston, John Johnston, Sarah Johnston, Wm. and George Johnston.[5]
Another Mary Johnston was still living in Knox Township in 1840:
1840 US Census - New Summerset Village, Knox Twp, Jefferson County, Ohio:
Mary Johnston - females: 1 (60<70), 1 (15<20)
This Mary was enumerated next to Joseph Russell and Joseph Marshall.
A Mary Johnston was enumerated in Saline Township in 1850:
1850 US Census - Saline Township, Jefferson County, Ohio (September 19, Family #1482):
Samuel McLane .. (age 37) Farmer 1000 - born in Ohio
........... Amanda .. (age 7) - born in Ohio
........... William .... (age 5) - born in Ohio
........... James ...... (age 3) - born in Ohio
........... Thomas ... (age 1) - born in Ohio
Mary Johnston .... (age 65) - born in Pennsylvania
Kesiah McLane .... (age 19) - born in Ohio
James Parsons ..... (age 22) Farmer - born in Ohio
Samuel married Mary Maple, daughter of Jesse Rich Maple, later in the same year.
