Biography

Abishai Marchant ("Merchant" in some records) was born in Yarmouth, Barnstable Co., MA 10 January 1650/51. He married about 1675 Mary Taylor.[1][2] Mary was born about 1649 in Yarmouth, the daughter of Richard Taylor; her mother's name is not confirmed-- she was not Ruth Whelden; she might have been Mary Whelden. Mary Taylor Marchant died 1 February 1717/1718 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Abishai died about 1712 in Yarmouth. They had the following children:[citation needed]
Samuel Marchant - b. 1673 in Yarmouth, Barnstable Co., MA, He died in 1676.
Jabez Marchant - b. about 1675 in Yarmouth. He died in 1676.
Hannah Marchant - b. about 1677 in Yarmouth. She married Matthew Pease 13 March 1702/03. Others [who?] say that she m. Loton West of Talbot, MD.
John Marchant - b. 1679/1680 in Yarmouth; d in Edgarstown, Duke, MA; m abt 1706 probably in Edgartown, Hepsibah HUXFORD 1688. Of him, Banks (p 79) writes: "The next of the name who is certainly know to have made a permanent settlement in this town [Edgartown] is John, who was in all probability the son of Abisha of Yarmouth, though proof is lacking. This John is the definite head of the Marchant family of Edgardtown, and he acquired his first property by purchase, April 8, 1707, when he bought a harbor lot, just south of Burial Hill, of Joseph Ripley. He was then a young man of twenty-seven years, and had just married his first wife. In 1711, he bought the so-called ministerial lot,' and both of these were retained by him for over half a century; and descended to his sons, Silas and Abisha. His life was uneventful, if we may judge from the entire absence of his name from the records, law, probate and court. Beyond serving as juror in 1722, 1730 to 1734, he attended strictly to his proviate affairs, and died February, 1767, at the ripe old age of 87 years."
Elizabeth Marchant - b. about 1681 in Yarmouth.
Samuel Marchant - b. 1683 in Yarmouth; m Joanna Gage
Ebenezer Marchant - b. about 1685 in Yarmouth. He married Bethia Day Willet 24 December 1719.
Jabez Marchant - b. about 1687 in Yarmouth. He married Mary Babson 12 Jan 1721.

Abishai resided Yarmouth, Mass.; later, 1695, Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard; returned to Yarmouth where living, 1714.

From the Edgartown Records, as transcribed by; Katherine Merwin Mayhew, Martha's Vineyard Historian; Abishai Marchant, son of John Marchant, b. Yarmouth Jan 10, 1650/51, died after 1714 probably at Yarmouth. He was of Martha's Vineyard on Dec 6, 1693 when he sold land to Lt. John Coffin.
The following is from handwritten notes in the Edgartown Historical Society; Plymouth Colony Records Vol. 5, p. 43: July 5, 1670, " Abishai Marchant, for being found to be in bed with Mary the wife of Morgan Jones, was fined the sume of 40s to the use of the Collonie."

In the book "History of Barnstable County", "Annals of Yarmouth" pages 195-195. "towards to late war", shows both the tax-paying inhabitants at this date, and their comparative wealth. We retain order of names, inasmuch as it probably indicates neighborhood. Abishai Marchant, 1.15. 3, he appears 28th on the list in the first colum, between Anthony Fry and Mr. Sunderland.
Abishai's father John appears in the second colum, second to last on the list. John Marchant, 2.11
