Biography

Lois May was born in 1868 to Joseph May and Sarah Matthews.

When the 1870 US Census was done Lois B. May was two years old, living in Fayette County Georgia with her parents and sister Millie. ^[1]

In 1880 Lois was eleven years old and living in Coweta County Georgia with her parents, four sisters and one baby brother.^[2]

Lois and William McElreath were married on August 3 1884 in Douglas County Georgia. ^[3]

In 1900, Lois was living with husband, William McElreath and four children in Athens, Georgia. ,^[4]

In 1910 Lois was widowed and had four of her children living with her in Athens Georgia. Also living with the family was Sarah's husband David Hemrick and their one year old son. Lois was working as a dressmaker in a dressmaking establishment. ^[5]

For several years between 1911 and 1913 Lois was teaching at the Second District Agricultural School in Tifton, Georgia. In 1915 she returned and was in charge of the girl's dorm and dining hall according to an article titled "New Teachers Named to Tift Farm School" in the Atlanta Constitution dated 25 Aug 1915, page 4. ^[6] In 1930 Lois was sixty years old and was living with her daughter Laura, her husband Horatio Burton and their daughter Lois in Athens Georgia. ^[7]

IN 1940 Lois McElreath and her daughter Lois Burton were living in Atlanta with her son-in-law David Hemrick and two of his children. At that time her daughter Sarah was no longer living in the home. There was also a lodger and a maid living in the home. ^[8]

Lois May McElreath died 10 October 1949 at the age of 81. She is buried in the Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens Georgia.^[9]
