A father with eleven sons in the American Revolution would surely be a record.[1]

Biography

Flag of Virginia
James was Virginia colonist.

James Mayo was born on December 11, 1711.[2]

He was first married to Ruth Underwood in about 1732; Ruth died on Feb 6, 1734, just four days after the birth of their only son, Valentine, born Feb 2, 1734. [3] [4]

A year or two later, James married Martha Williamson on March 3, 1735 or 1736, in Goochland County, Virginia. [5]

Children of the marriage (research in progress):
  1. John Mayo (11/14/1736, died shortly after) [6]
  2. James Mayo (8/16/1738) [7]
  3. John Mayo (April 29, 1740)[8]
  4. Martha Mayo Ladd
  5. Ann Mayo Williams
  6. Thomas Mayo
  7. Williamson Mayo
  8. Richard George Mayo
  9. Joseph Mayo
  10. Robert Mayo
  11. Jacob Mayo
  12. Benjamin Mayo
  13. Stephen Mayo
  14. Mary Mayo (March 3, 1764)[9]

From his memorial page:

James Mayo moved to Caroline County Va along with his mother. He later went back to Middlesex county and along with his brother-in-law Robert Williamson, sold inherited land from his father. The deed stated it was land owned by his father Valentine Mayo. He proceeded to Goochland County and in 1743/44, he purchased a 413 acre plantation on the northern-most fork of Beaverdam Creek known as Castle Branch. His land bordered Nicholas Perkins, Sandy (Landy) Richardson, and Col. John Symms near what is now Perkinsville and near the corner of Louisa and Hanover county line. At that time, Three Choped Road ran through it. Now, US 250 follows the path of Three Choped Road and I-64 runs parallel to it; both through James Mayo’s 413 acres. He raised his 15 children there and then in 1772 he purchased a plantation on the north side of the south fork of Cunningham Creek near Palmyra, and Kidd’s Store Va which became Fluvanna Co. Va.
The children and grandchildren of James Mayo are detailed in Charles Mayo’s book, Joseph Mayo, 2nd Lt. Fluvanna Va. Patriot, A Genealogy and Family History, 1620-2001.[10]

James Mayo died on March 13, 1776 in Fluvanna County, Virginia, and was most likely buried at his ancestral plantation, James Mayo Plantation, in Fluvanna County near Cunningham Creek (North side). Suggestions that he was buried in the Grace Episcopal Cemetery in Bremo Bluff, Fluvanna County, Virginia have been discounted as anachronistic[10] -- the church at Bremo Bluff was built in 1883.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Mayo-4869 and Mayo-386 appear to represent the same person because: I have noticed that Mayo-4869 seems to duplicate information already present in Mayo-386. Please consider a merge of the more recent profile into 386.

What project is protecting this profile? There is no project box... and therefore a database error #921.
