Note: William B. McAllister, of Pembroke, was born in Eardley, Ottawa County, P. Q., in 1840; his father, one of the early pioneers of that place, having come from Scotland in 1829. At the age of six years William was left fatherless, and never enjoyed any other scholastic advantages than those of the common schools of the time. At eighteen he turned his attention to the lumber trade, which he has since successfully followed. In 1865 he married Miss Maria Stewart, of Hull, P. Q., and five children bless the union. Doing the largest trade in lumber in the part of the country in which he operates, Mr. McAllister naturally wished to be centrally situated in respect to his business. In fulfilment of this desire he, in 1879, purchased the beautiful mansion and grounds in Pembroke known as the Suffell Estate, delineated on another page, where he has since resided, and to which he has given the euphonious and appropriate name of "Forest Home." He also owns thirty-one town lots in Pembroke. The logs yearly handled by Mr. McAllister amount to twenty-six million feet of lumber. His success is based entirely on his own exertions, he truly being a "self-made man." Historical Atlas of Lanark & Renfrew Counties. H. Belden & Co., 1880-1881.
