James was baptized 7 Jan 1833 at the Presbyterian Congregation, Portstewart, by Rev. John Stewart, Minister from 1829 to 1871^[1].

Research Notes

• Note that the townland "Big Bellemond/t" no longer exists. It probably was split into the current townlands of Bellemont More, North Bellemont and South Bellemont.
• The Ordnance Survey Memoirs transcription indicates that James and his parents emigrated to Canada in 1834 when James was 18 weeks old. However, the baptism register shows James was born in Dec 1832. Either the year of emigration should have been 1833 (possibly traveled with John McAlister who is listed further down the same page), or James' age should have been 18 months ("18w" vs. "18m"). Either way, there is an error in the original memoirs or the transcript.
  • Using James' birth date and age, the family left Ireland either about May 1833 (18wks) or about June 1834 (18mos).
