Research Notes

Issue

There has been much confusion regarding Mary and her older sister Agnes. Her sister was born in 1739 and Mary was born in 1744.

Parents

Robert McClanahan came to Augusta County from Ireland. The time of his coming has not been certainly determined, but it was at an early day. His deed to three hundred and thirty-one acres of land by William Beverly, dated May 27, 1741, is on record in Orange Courthouse, Virginia. There was no clerk's office, in Augusta County, until 1745. His wife, Sarah Breckinridge, was daughter of Alexander Breckinridge, who came to America from the North of Ireland in 1728, and removed from Pennsylvania to a farm near the present site of Staunton, in Augusta County, Virginia.

No evidence a daughter named Polly was born to Thomas and Agnes Poage.

'Please Note: 'Mary "Polly"' Agnes McClanahan [3] was wife of Thomas Poage Sr, RV war veteran. They married 27 Apr 1762 in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia. Polly was a daughter of Robert McClenachan "McClanahan" Sr. and Sarah Breckenridge. Robert and Sarah immigrated from Ireland to Augusta County in the Virginia Colony. There are records that are not confirmed about Polly's birth place. DAR application has Polly born in Ireland in 1744. [4]

The families of Breckenridge, Lewis, McClanahan, Patton, Poage, Preston and St Clair, all inter-related, had much to do with the early civil and religious life of early Augusta County, especially in the Staunton neighborhood.[4]

Thomas Poage and Agnes McClanahan had eight children the exact order of whom is somewhat uncertain because of the absence of birth and marriage dates. The conjectural tabulation which follows seems to fit best the dates that are firmly known.[4]

Poage-43 and McClanahan-207 appear to represent the same person because: Poage is married name, not LNAB
