Sept. 5, 1732 John Mackelroy a planter sold "John's Beginning" in Baltimore County, Maryland to John Long of Cecil County, L50, 200 acres, John (x) Mackelroy. Wit: Signed Avinton Felps and Stephen Onions. One must assume now that the McElroy family, Avinton and Rachel Felps, had began their Southwest movement along the trail of "The Great Wagon Road" also known as "The Carolina Road". It does appear that both families left Baltimore County Maryland during the later part of 1732. The family of John and Francis McElroy disappeared into the wilderness from the years of 1732 until 1742 before surfacing in the North Carolina frontiers, but it appears from a land deed that Avinton and Rachel Felps, temporarily located in Orange County Virginia.[3]

  • Find A Grave: Memorial #130987014 CAUTION....Please see note from Karen Spencer member 47294998 There is no proof he is the son of Patrick and Rachel Muckleroy. Another researcher found they were not even in Maryland, where John was born. And Durham is not the maiden name of Frances, John's wife. The Frances Durham listed in James Durham's will was a male from other records. The dates for John's birth and death dates are made up as I have never found any dates other than 1690 for birth and possible 1674 for death.

I did not go with McLeroy! My Rachel is Mackeloy-13. Going by WIkitree rules, we are to use the earliest known written record for the name. You have two different documents. The one that has the different spellings of the same name, has the dates 1712-1715 with the name spelled Mackelroy. The other handwritten page is spelled the same way. I asked about this on G2G; I wrote, "What do I do when someone refuses to use the oldest written name" Here is the answer I got, "Well here at Wikitree we do not do that - point out to them that policy is that we use WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE and that we for historical accuracy must use the name as it was shown in the first document made about that person." there's more but it's not needed here. It's a little harsh, but that is what the Honor code is about.
Lisa, I see you have chosen to go with McLeroy, as long as all the spellings are kept together, I believe it will be fine.  :)

McElroy-1032 - I'm sticking to his pension records for spelling of last name. Logistically speaking the spelling changes to McElroy, I have documented 4-7 different spellings anywhere from McIlroy to Muckleroy, I have listed all spellings I have found so far. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I don't see any merges for him, so I believe we are good for now.

Ok, I'm really more concerned with Rachel so I can do the merge of Mackleroy-13 and McElroy-25. I could change my 13, but I'm taking the advice from multiple pilots on G2G by using the name on the oldest written record.
Lisa, his name has been changed several times, back and forth. Even in old records. It stands as is for a while.

Please change the LNAB to coincide with the documentation you have on this page. Mackelroy is what is on the earliest written document. The profile should not be spelled in the way the modern name is spelled, but what is on the records.
Mackelroy-1 and McElroy-1032 appear to represent the same person because: similar wife, dates and chlld
