Biography

Isabel was born in 1432. Isabel is the child of Philip Mead, mayor of Bristol, and Elizabeth Sharpe. Isabel passed away in 1516.

Parents: "Philip Meade, Esq., of Bristol and London, merchant, Mayor of Bristol..., his wife Isabel."[1]

Isabel's brother-in-law "bequeathed all his paternal lands to King Henry VII and his heirs male, either in exchange for his new marquessate or because he disapproved of his brother Maurice having married beneath the nobility to Isabel Mead, the daughter of Philip Meade, alderman & mayor of Bristol."[2]

They had three sons and one daughter. Lady Isabel Meade died May 29, 1514 in Coventry, Warwick, England.[3]

Note on Surname

Special thanks to Charles Meads for information on the Meade name:

"...the relatives of Nicholas atte Mede, Thomas atte Mede, and Philip Mede. All of these people from Bristol and Somerset county are from the original family of atte Mede, and they eventually changed their last name to Meade for a while, and then Meads in later times. They are NOT DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE ONES WHO WERE CALLED 'MEAD' FOR MANY GENERATIONS, and that is the main difference between the Meads and Mead family. The Meads family of England and North America are descended from the atte Mede family of Somersetshire, and they never spelled it Mead. They changed it to Meade for a while, and then Thomas Meade's wife changed her son William's name to Meads, when they lived near William Shakespeare." Maurice Berkeley, born about 1435. He married in 1465 Isabel Meade (or Mede). They had three sons, and one daughter.

Thank you!

Mede-21 and Meade-46 appear to represent the same person because: Need to merge fathers, grandfathers, etc. first. Thanks.
Hi! I posted a message on Mede-21 about her last name. I favor Meade, since that's what Richardson has first - "Meade (or Mede)" on p 184, Magna Carta Ancestry. I'm holding off on proposing a merge for a bit to wait for comments, but the proposed merge of duplicate profiles for hubby Maurice doesn't need to wait. Cheers, Liz

Mead, Meade, or Mede? Richardson has "Meade (or Mede)" (Magna Carta Ancestry, page 184). I'm partial to Meade, but if you feel strongly about keeping the LNAB field (and profile ID) Mede, let me know & we can start a G2G discussion. Thanks!
