Jacob "Yockel" (nickname) was the third child and second son of John "Hannes" Miller, Sr. and Magdalena Lehman. Jacob married Anna Stutzman (daughter of Christian Stutzman and Barbara Hochstetler) in 1777 in Somerset, Pennsylvania at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Jacob and Anna moved to the Glades after her mother died. After 1790, Jacob had his own farm in Elklick Township. By this time they had four sons:

John J.
Benedict
Henry
Jacob Jr.

In 1799, he moved to Ohio in Sugarcreek township. They made the trip by Conestoga wagon. Jacob had been the Amish-Mennonite minister and bishop in the Casselman River congregation in Elklick Township, and as the other settlers came in, was the first minister in Ohio as well. They called him Yockel Miller and he at first served the Amish settlers in both Tuscarawas and Holmes Counties. His wife Anna died in 1814 and gradually the duties of the ministry and farm were given over to his son, Jacob, Jr. Jacob died at the age of 81.[1]
