Biography

Name

He is referred to as Rogerus de Montealto in the Visitation[1]

Roger de Montalt, brother and heir, omitted by Dugdale, but inserted by Glover, is proved by the Charter of Ralph de Montalt to Hernyne, already cited, "testibus Roberto de Montealto, Rogero et Ranulfo fratribus suis."[2]

Birth Year Estimation

Since Roger's parents died 1162-1177, and he was himself an adult by 1177, with several siblings, his birth has been advanced to 1150.

Parents

His parents were Robert de Mohaut (or Montealto) and his wife Leucha who was possibly a daughter of William I Fitznigel (or Fitz Neel).

Roger de Monalt, successor of Roger preceding, and hitherto confounded with him, was most probably his son, as no wife of any possible younger brother of the elder Roger is noticed in the Inquisition above citd, which records the wives of all that succeeded to possession of Hawarden.[2]

Roger de Montalt, brother and heir, omitted by Dugdale, but inserted by Glover, is proved by the Charter of Ralph de Montalt to Hernyne, already cited, "testibus Roberto de Montealto, Rogero et Ranulfo fratribus suis."[2]

Marriage

Roger was Lord of Hawarden, and husband of Nicholaa, asby the Inquisition 4 Edward I.[2]

Castle and Manor of Mold

Dugdale mentions the restitution to him of the Castle and Manor of Mold, which had suffered in the wards with llewelyn and David; also his military services against Prince David, along with the Earls of Gloucester and Hereford; his sale of a large part of his Manor of Coventry (inherited by his wife from the Earls of Chester) to dedfray cost of preparation for joining in the Crusade; and his death in 42 Henry III, leaving, by his wife the Lady Cecelia d'Albini, John, Robert and Leucha, wife of Philip de Orreby. [2]

Children

Roger was brother and successor of Robert. He was married to Nicholaa and they had two children – Leucha born about 1190 and Roger born about 1200. [3]

It seems best to use his brother's present "uncle" Eustace for the husband of Nichole. He already has the right children. We need to move Nichole to him, and also give him new parents.

I agree with John Atkinson. (Although the father of the young Roger should be called uncertain, we should connect to Robert.) But both Roger's exist. Do we need a new profile for the husband of Nichole?

Any source for the son Aylmer? Should we disconnect?

The Roger de Mohaut who married Nicole, is the grandson of Robert de Mohaut and Leuca, not their son.

He is the son of their son Robert. This is according to The Complete Peerage, vol. 9, p. 12.
