Biography

Margaret “Peggy” Moore Wardlaw
Birth: 1739
Death: 1780 Donalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
Burial: Greenville Presbyterian Church CemeteryDonalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA

According to FindAGrave memorial she is daughter of John Moore and Mary Ann Ellett. Her parents' are listed on her headstone at Greenville Presbyterian Church in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Entered by Geneadiva Mere.

Topher Sims provides her first name as Virginia rather than Margaret; so far, haven't seen that first name in the record, but will add here in case it is and I missed it.

Margaret's birth date is given as 1739 from Find-A-Grave, [1] and 1738 from the SAR Membership application.[2]

She is the daughter of John Moore, who was born in Virginia circa 1735. Margaret's mother was Mary Ellet Moore. (but see Research Note on John Moore).

In 1759 she married John Wardlaw, Sr. The Wardlaws and the Moores were among the early Scots-Irish settlers to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, but by 1760 or so John Wardlaw and some of the Moores began to move to the Ninety-Six District area of South Carolina, parts of which later became Abbeville County.

The 'proof of lineage' is listed in the application papers for the Sons of the American Revolution, based on John Wardlaw's service in the war. In part, it states that John Wardlaw served under the command of 'the gallant Samuel Moore' , Margaret's brother.

Margaret (aka 'Peggy) died in 1780, and is buried at Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Her tombstone is pictured here.

Children:
John Wardlaw, Jr.
William C. Wardlaw

Moore-21633 and Moore-14356 appear to represent the same person because: the circumstances that previously prevented the merge have been corrected. While the birth is different on the two profiles, the husband is the same, and while they are secondary sources, the sources listed indicate the birth of 1739

I see Margaret was removed from the parents that were too young to be her parents. I posted on discord for the best practice to merge multiple people into one profile and the answer was to merge The top into the lowest and also merge the 2nd into the lowest number. I have done that with Moore-14356 being the lowest and should be the final profile for Margaret Moore. The other 2 profile # are Moore-21633 and Moore-64398.

Moore-64398 and Moore-14356 appear to represent the same person because: Appear to be the same person; married to same man.

Moore-14356 and Moore-21633 are not ready to be merged because: I prefer to wait until the parents are removed from Margaret. The father recorded is only four years older than her and this merge will not improve the accuracy of the profile or the tree. Please let me know once the parents are resolved/removed and I will be glad to approve. Thank You!

Yes, I see your point--I agree it's confusing! I just thought it would be simpler to correct one profile than to try and work on two at the same time. I am not a profile manager here, but think this family is significant in terms of the history of the Rev War in this area and would really like to see Margaret's place in it all figured out; the SAR application for her husband Wardlaw doesn't explicitly say she is the daughter of John Moore, but it does say she is the sister of Captain Samuel Moore, who was killed by 'Bloody' Bill Cunningham. And Samuel is a son of John... so this is rather confusing! And of course Find A Grave has it carved in stone (literally) that says her parents are John Moore and Mary Ann Ellet...If the marriage data is correct then John Moore can't be any older than 1735...? Which would make him a sibling, not a father... Thank you for your response.

Yes, I have seen the stone; however, the stone doesn't provide dates for her parents. I have reviewed Genealogy of the Wardlaw family with some accounts of other families with which it is connected by Joseph G. Wardlaw, written in 1929 and available on Family Search books; [1]; page 15 starts with the family of Robert Wardlaw and John's family starts on page 19. Margaret is recorded only as of the daughter of John and Mary Ann Moore and a sister of Samuel. Her mother's maiden name is not provided, nor are the dates of her parent's birth and deaths. MOORE is a common name and we need to be accurate when adding parents (which is why I didn't add her parents when I added her several years ago).

I am not trying to be difficult and definitely recognize the importance of this family in regards to the Revolutionary War as well as their early Virginia and South Carolina history.

I just want the profile to be as correct as possible. I am surprised the WikiTree algorithm didn't flag this when these parents were added on the 2nd Margaret Moore Wardlaw profile. (Moore-21633). Something like this should be what I call a hard stop as the profile manager has Margaret born in 1730 and her father in 1735. Like you, I suspect he may have John (b. 1735) confused with a brother, but need proof of that too.

I say we wait on Drew to respond and take it from there. I am confident he will remove or correct the parents and then we can move forward with the merge.

Kindest Regards

Moore-14356 and Moore-21633 appear to represent the same person because: The date discrepancy between parent (John Moore) and child (Margaret) is difficult to sort out, but these profiles are of the same woman.

I cannot approve this merge until Margaret is removed from these parents. The father is recorded as only about four years older than Margaret and the same for the mother. I do not see any documentation for these parents. Once she is removed from the parents, happy to approve the merge. Additionally, These profiles should be merged into the lowest number which is Moore-14356.

One more point: This profile Margaret Moore, daughter of John, doesn't include her famous brother, Samuel. So, if Samuel is added we need the proofs for him too.

Does the Genealogy of the Wardlaw family by Joseph G. Wardlaw meet the test of Genealogical Proof Standard or DAR Standard?

So far, I don't think so, but will continue reading. Maybe I can locate documentation based on the information in the book.

I would like documentation for her marriage to John Wardlaw as well as documentation for her parents' John Moore and Mary Ann Ellett.

I would also like to firmly link her to her son, James Wardlaw.

Thanks for any assistance with this profile.
