About Capt. William Neville A Patriot of the American Revolution for NORTH CAROLINA with the rank of CAPTAIN. DAR Ancestor # A082528

The following taken from A 370-YEAR HISTORY OF ONE NEVILLE FAMILY (1612 - 1982) 1988 by Joseph B. Neville, 2624 E. Southern Ave., C-213, Tempe, AZ 85282

This fifth-generation William Neville was born in one of Virginia's tidewater counties, possibly Gloucester. As in the case of all the children of Joseph and Ann (Bohannan) Neville, he grew up on Rockingham Farm located four miles north of Warrenton, then in Prince William County. Boogher says that in 1762 he took an oath as ensign in colonial militia. I believe he had married Ann Oldham in 1759. In the Salt Lake City Mormon Library, I copied records from the family bible of this William Neville's second son, Yelvaton (not Yelverton, as it usually has been written).

Transcribed from The Heritage of Rutherford County, North Carolina, Vol. 1, 1984 (pub. by the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, 1984) page 341. Transcription and sketch written by Shirley L. Wilcox.

Capt. William Neville was an early, but brief resident of Rutherford County, North Carolina. His parentage is unknown, though it is supposed by many that he was a son of Joseph Neville and Ann Bohannan, but proof of this relationship is still lacking. The first record we find for William is in 1760 when he "Farm lets" 200 acres of land in the Manor of Leeds, Fauquier County, Virginia. The rental agreement is for the duration of his natural life and also for that of his wife, Winefred and son, Jesse. A similar document for 202 1/2 acres in the Manor of Leeds was made in 1763 listing his wife and son, Yelverton. By 1768 he had moved to North Carolina as he witnessed a deed in Tryon County at that time.

William Neville apparently saw service in two wars. He is shown as an ensign in the Fauquier County, Virginia militia in 1762 at which time we were engaged in the French and Indian War. He was also a Captain in the Revolutionary War stationed on the frontiers of Rutherford and Tyron County, North Carolina William never received a pension but references to his service can be found in a pay voucher at the North Carolina State Archives and also in the pension records of his son, Yelverton(S4614), and in the pension of Thomas R. Musick. His son, Jessee, also served in the Revolutionary War and was pensioned.

For many years William served as a Justice of the Peace. The first record of this position is found in Tryon County, North Carolina in 1776. He continued in this capacity after the new county of Rutherford was formed, through 1789. He also served as a sheriff in Rutherford County, as mentioned in the pension of his son, Velverton, and as found in various deed books for 1788 and 1789.

By the time of the 1790 Census, William was a resident of 96 District, Pendleton County, South Carolina with three males under 16, seven females and three slaves. Deed records of the county show that from 1792-1794 he was a Justice of the Peace. By 1799 he had moved again, this time to Barren County, Kentucky and he shows up on the tax lists for that county through 1808. In 1808 he gave a power of attorney to sell his Barren County, Kentucky land and about this time probably moved to White County, Tennessee. Tax records for this county begin in 1811 and William appears in 1811 and 1812, but not in later years. The Barren County, Kentucky deed shows that in Sept 1813 he gave a power of attorney to his son John to sell off his land, and that is the last record we have for him.

William was married to Wineford Oldham, a daughter of John and Mary Oldham of Northumberland County, Virginia as shown by a 1792 power of attorney in Henry County, Virginia Deed Book 5. Wineford and William Neville both signed the marriage consent in 1796 of their daughter, Malinda. We do not have a record of Wineford after this, but it should be noted that the White County, Tennessee deeds seldom listed the name of the wife, so one cannot assume that she was deceased.

In 1902 a manuscript of the Neville family was compiled by William F. Boogher, a professional genealogist. In it he showed the following children for William and Wineford Neville: Yelverton, Jesse, Joseph, William, Charlotte, Millie, Frances, John, Winifred, Joicy and Letus. Unfortunately there is no indication as to where this list of children is from. Using other sources, we have been able to prove that Velverton, Jesse, Millie(Malinda), John, Joicy (Joyce) and Letus(Lettice) were indeed his children. From pension records we find births for Jesse, 5 July 1759, Fauquier County, Virginia and Velverton, 25 December 1763, Fauquier County, Virginia.

Marriage records show that Joyce (Neville) Harrington married John Howdershell 6 Feb 1796, Lincoln County, Kentucky. Malinda married David Thompson 3 Dec 1796 Mercer County, Kentucky and John married Millie Neville 24 May 1804, Barren County, Kentucky. Jesse is said to have married Margaret, widow of Thomas Lynch and stayed in Pickens County, South Carolina where his will was proved 25 July 1842. Velverton married Elizabeth and according to his obituary died in his 97th year in Jackson County, Tennessee.

According to Boogher, Charlotte married Hardin Williams. Frances married Richard Melton, Wineford married Joel Melton and Lettice married Richard Lundy. Four of the girls moved to Missouri. Wineford and Lettice to Cole County, Missouri, Joyce to St. Louis County, Missouri and Malinda to Callaway County, Missouri, then later to Lake County, California where she died 19 Jan 1869. Sons Joseph and William resided in White County, Tennessee. William seems to be the William B. who married Mary Ann McKinney, March 1810 in Barren County, Kentucky.

This writer is a descendant of William Neville through his daughter Malinda who married David Thompson. David appears on the tax lists of Barren county, Kentucky from 1799 to 1805. About that time he moved to White county, Tennessee where in 1807 he was a juror. They resided here until 1817 when David sold his land and disappears from the tax records. They moved to Callaway county, Missouri where David died and a settlement of his estate was made 5 June 1827 listing his wife Malinda and sons Wm. N., John, George C., David H. and Jesse. In 1854 Malinda crossed the plains with an ox team and spent the remainder of her days with her sons John A. and James Townsend Thompson in northern California.

Their son James Townsend Thompson seems to have been named for a surveyor and neighbor in White County, Tennessee. James was born 19 Apr 1811, White County, Tennessee and married Louisa Clay, 22 Nov 1835, Cole Co. Missouri. He served in the Black Hawk War (Blwt 63529-55-160) and was a member from Santa Clara Co of the Third California State Assembly. He died 11 Oct 1869 in San Diego, Ca while on a trip. Louisa was born 29 Mar 1811 at St. Charles County, Missouri a daughter of Jeremiah Walker Clay and Nancy Ott, a widow. Louisa died 16 Jan 1892, Lakeport, California and like her husband and mother-in-law is buried at Hartley Cemetery in Lakeport, California.

Notes

  • Per Find A Grave his birth year is 1740; it also states unknown date of death. But, I'm not changing death date till more research is done. But, I'm not sure where September or the year came from. I found William on a petition in St. Louis Co., MO, in February of 1818. 3 of his daughters were living in St. Louis Co., MO at this time and some believe this is where he died and is most likely where he is buried. But, I'm still researching........but, death date should atleast be after 1818.

Neville-3021 and Neville-134 appear to represent the same person because: Probably intended to be same man but mothers needs to be sourced and correct.
