Thomas was born about 1823 son of William Nisbet and Catharine (Paterson) Nisbet (abt.1791-bef.1859) .
In the 1841 census Thomas (age 20), Coal miner, was in Faskine, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[1]
He was married 04 Feb 1844[2] at Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland to Margaret Houston (1811–1892) widow of Robert Hamilton and daughter of James Houston and Agnes Brown Margaret died in 1892 claimed to be 66 years old but was 78 in 1891. Their children:
It was recorded in the Minutes of the Kirk Session of Old Monkland November 1844. "Thomas Nisbett, miner, Faskine and Margaret Houston, his wife, confessing guilty of the sin of antenuptial forninacation. They were solemnly rebuked and absolved from scandal.[7]
A further record in the minutes of the Kirk Session of Old Monkland dated 3 Feb 1845, shows both Thomas and his wife being called as witnesses in a case where the father of a child was in question. They had little to had to the case apart from a conversation heard in company while in a public house.[8]
In the 1851 census Thomas (age 27), Coalminer, was the married head of household in Stonecraigs Row, 23, Cambusnethan, Middle Ward, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[9]
In the 1861 census Thomas (age 40), Coal miner, was the married head of household in Morningside Village, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[10]
He passed away 25 Nov 1862. [11]
His wife died in 1892[12]
After naming patterns at that time the parents of Thomas should be William and Catherine and it appears they followed the pattern as Margarets oldest daughter is Agnes and James is the 2nd son. There is a William Nisbet and Catherine Patterson that were in the area at that time and had children in both Falkirk and Old Monkland. There is no record of a birth of a Thomas but his death record seems to confirm he is a son.
Margaret Houston was married before to Robert Hamilton and had a daughter Agnes Hamilton who married 31 Dec 1858 Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland to William Mills Her death certificate gives parents as Robert Hamilton and Margaret Houston subsequently married to Thomas Nisbet
Sometimes claimed-- but not the same Thomas Nisbet who was son of William Nisbet and Magdalene Wilson
When the 1841 census was taken Thomas was living in Faskine, North Lanarkshire. Faskine, an estate and a village in Old Monkland parish, Lanarkshire, on the right bank of North Calder Water, ¾ mile W of Calderbank. The estate contains coal and ironstone mines, worked from an earlier period than any others in the great Clydesdale mineral field. Pop. (1861) 514, (1871) 656, (1881) 475. [13] When the 1851 census was taken Thomas and his family lived at 23 Stonecraigs Row, Newmains which was owned by the Coltness Iron Works.
A later description of Newmains. In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Newmains like this: Newmains, a small town in Cainbusnethan parish, Lanarkshire, on the cross-railway from Morningside to Holytown, adjacent to the Coltness Ironworks, 2 miles ENE of Wishaw, and 6 by railway SE of Holytown. Standing amid a rich mineral tract, and inhabited chiefly by miners and ironworkers, it has a post office, with money order, savings' bank, and telegraph departments, a railway station, the Coltness memorial quoad sacra church (1878), St Bridget's Roman Catholic church (1871; 300 sittings), a Roman Catholic school, and an elegant edifice, erected by the Coltness Ironworks Company at a cost of £3000.The school affords regular instruction, under a full staff of teachers, to over 600 children, and is maintained by the Ironworks Company.
