Thomas was the son of Edward and Mary Eustace Nolan, the seventh of eight children. The 1851/2 Canada West Census lists his age as 14, suggesting he was born in 1837, in Douro Township, [1] where Thomas lived all his life. (A later census indicates that Thomas was unable to read or write, so there may not have been a school in the area.) The 1871 Peterborough County Atlas also lists his birthplace as Douro Township and that his birthdate was 1837.[2]
In 1861, Thomas was living with his older brother Laughlin and his family, and his younger sister Mary Ann, likely on the farm that his late parents had settled. His age is indicated as 20, which is inconsistent with the previous census.[3]
Within the next decade, Thomas married Catherine Hammond and settled on his own farm. By 1871, they were the parents of four children. Thomas' age was listed as 40.[4] Five more children were born in the next decade, and Catherine's mother Rose Hammond was also living with Thomas and Catherine. Thomas' age was listed as 55.[5]
Thomas and Catherine remained on their farm for the remainder of their lives.[6] Several of their sons continued farming with their father.[7][8]
Thomas died in 1919, when he might have been about 82 years old. He is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, in Douro.[9]
Research Notes
The 1911 Census indicates Thomas farm was on Lot 12, and the Concession numbers appears to be 7.[10]
