Biography

Hannah Oates was born 17 Mar 1820 in Darlington County, South Carolina. She passed away 3 Feb 1892 in Liberty, Autauga County, Alabama. She married (1) Daniel McNeil, and (2) Robert Counsel Bazzell.

Hannah also had a relationship with William Riley Bullard (abt.1818-1874), a neighbor, resulting in at least one child, Sarah Ann (Bullard) Cook (1842-1937).

Research notes

Hannah Oates married (1) Daniel McNeil on 1 Mar 1838 in Autauga County, Alabama. Because of this, researchers presume that her older set of children — Dicey (born about 1839), Sarah Ann (born 28 Feb 1842), and Dora Ann (born 10 Jun 1844) — were the children of Mr. McNeil. However, this is not at all clear. Sarah Ann went by the surname Bullard, as indicated by her marriage license to James Cook[1] and by the death certificates of her children.[2] DNA testing of her grandchildren shows clearly that her father was not Mr. McNeil, but William Riley Bullard, a neighbor of the Stephen Oates family in 1840.[3] The 1840 census listing for Stephen Oates shows a daughter aged between 15 and 20 in the household, who is almost certainly Hannah, as well as a daughter under 5 years, who is probably Dicey. Daniel McNeil is nowhere to be found. It appears strongly that the marriage between Hannah Oates and Daniel McNeil had broken down by 1840. References to Daniel McNeil in Alabama newspapers in 1842 and 1843, regarding a bankruptcy case, appear to indicate that he did not die, but likely absconded.

Because of the clear paternity of Sarah Ann Bullard by somebody other than Hannah's lawful husband, and the appearance that she was no longer living with her husband by 1840, there is serious doubt whether Daniel McNeil was the father of Hannah's third daughter, Dora Ann. Since Dora Ann assumed the name "Bazzell" after Hannah's marriage to Robert C. Bazzell in 1845, and never used the name Bullard like her sister, it appears unlikely that William Riley Bullard was her father either. An examination of the DNA of her descendants may help identify her father. Likewise, the paternity of Hannah's oldest daughter, Dicey, should also be examined through DNA. —Richardson-19564 02:06, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
