Hi again Sue

I thought I'd let you know that the system doesn't stop you from adding people with the same name born on the same day, it does offer you suggestions to check when you're creating a profile.

However, it's a good idea to check before you create a profile, especially with older ancestors, because sometimes people use different name variants, eg Alice and Alyce, or they've estimated birth dates which can vary greatly. I usually do this by entering the last name in the search box at the top of all profiles. A table displays all the people with that last name. I then click on the Name column header, which sorts the data by the name, and sometimes I also click on the Birth column header to sort it by birth date as well.

Happy WikiTreeing!

Hi Sue

Thanks for your messages. One of the best ways to see if you have duplicate profiles which may need merging is to:

  1. open your Watchlist - which is in the

My WikiTree on the top right of most pages,

  1. click on Find Matches
  2. click on Find possible matches in your watchlist.

The Find Ancestor Matches page opens. Beside each profile in the list there are options to Compare, Merge, Match, Reject.

  1. Click on the compare option.
  2. the two profiles display side-by-side, at the top of the page there are instructions. If you think the two profiles are duplicates, click the highlighted merge them.

Hope this helps Sue, please let me know how you're going,

Maryann

Hello Sue

Thanks for joining WikiTree. I'm a Mentor available to answer any questions or help solve any issues you may have about WikiTree.

How To Use WikiTree is a good starting point, and the Help Index is an important place to find out how to do most tasks.

Do you have Royal Ancestors? They are already here on Wikitree! Rather than create duplicate profiles for them, please contact the EuroAristo Project to discuss connecting your family line to their profiles.

If you have questions, feel free to ask me via my profile page.

Maryann ~ WikiTree Mentor

p.s. WikiTree guidelines for "Last Name at Birth" says to "use their convention, not ours" - see Name Fields for more info. Cheers, Liz

Hi again!

I’m glad you found us. I just confirmed you as a member (once you sign the Honor Code, you’ll be a full member – aka a Wiki Genealogist). An important aspect of WikiTree is providing sources for information (even if it’s just "Aunt Louisa told me in 1984...") – my profile page has a link to Sources Resources, where I’ve tried to provide an overview of source information.

Give G2G or me a holler if you get stuck on anything, and thank you for joining our collaborative tree. Remember that our mission is to build a global tree with just one profile per person, so please look for duplicates before adding a profile.

Enjoy!

Yes, I agree with your mission and your rules.

I started researching my family history when living in England during the 1960s & 1970s, using original parish registers, wills, censuses, deeds and land records, as well as living family sources. My gt aunts were very fussy about the spelling of their surnames, so I am hoping to correct these. Sue

Welcome Sue!

As a guest, you can search for your ancestors and participate in G2G, where you can ask questions that you didn't find an answer to in WikiTree Help (see the "Help" drop-down menu at upper right–for additional links that may be of use, please click my name and check out the links I list under my "Greeter" section–especially the Sources links and the link to my fellow greeter Debby, who also has helpful information on her profile page).

If you would like to join WikiTree, and help with our mission of one tree, please read the Honor Code, volunteer, and post a comment on your profile page; we'll be glad to add you to the WikiTree community.

Happy Hunting!
