He was theson of Carson and Cassa (Carlton) Patterson. He served as a captain in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. Robert B. joined Co.B 47th Inf. 12/8/1861 at Camp Trenton. On 12/16/1861 he was made 2nd Lt., and 1st Lt. on 5/8/1862. On10/21/1863 he was appointed Captain. R.B. was captured at the Battle of Nashville 12/16/1864 and was sent to Johnson's Island prison. He was released 6/17/1865. He was 5' 11" tall, light complected, dark hair and blue eyes, taken from war record.
He died on June 20, 1893, and was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery located at the Spring Hill Baptist Church near Eaton, Tennessee. Polina survived him by forty years, dying on July 13, 1933, in Gibson County. She, too, was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery. She and Robert had nine children: Mattie, Jesse, Bertie, Russell, Minnie, Gordie, Ruby, Mary, and Irene. He passed away in 1893.
