Biography

Timeline

Religion: Baptist. 1752 Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts.

  • 1759 Massachusetts Land Records: Mial Pierce sold his homestead farm to six of his seven sons: Wheeler, Nathan, Mial, Job, Caleb, and Joshua. The land was to be divided into seven parts, with the six sons dividing 6 of the 7 parts among them. the 7th part was to go to Joshua in consideration that he provide his oldest brother, Ephraim 14 bushels of corn for as long as Ephraim shall live. After that he was to give Ephraim's 3 daughters: Judah, Phebe, and Elizabeth, three dollars each.
    • Prior to American currency, "dollars" referred to Spanish dollars, or Pieces of Eight, which was considered international currency of the times. [2]
  • 14 April 1759. Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts: (Deacon) Mial Pierce land deed lists his sons (by Judith Round): Wheeler, Nathan, Miel, Job, Caleb, Joshua, Ephraim.[3]

Deacon Mial Pierce died October 18, 1786 aged ninety-four.

Marriages

He married Judith Round.

She was born in 1686 died October 6, 1744.

They lived in Warwick, Rhode Island, and in Swansea and Rehoboth, Massachusetts.

From Family Search.

John Round family of Swansea and Rehoboth" pg 37-40 8. JUDITH2 ROUND (Johnl), b. 1687 (on gravestone of her son, Nathan3, below), d. 6 Oct. 1744, in the 58th year of her age (RVR & gravestone of her son, Nathan3).
She was called "Judeth Round" in her father's Will. She m, 26 Nov. 1711 at Swansea (SVR) MIAL PEARCE/PIERCE, b. 24 Apr. 1693 (RVR & son Nathan's3 gravestone), d. Oct. 1786 in the 94th year of his age (son Nathan's3 gravestone).
Apparently after the death of Judith2, Mial m. again. The original Swansea Clerk's records contain the entry: "Mial Peirce of Rehoboth and Mary Mason of Swanzey ware married Januery the 15:1744/5 by Job Mason Elder of a Church of Christ in Swanzey" (SVR-B, p. 92, in the original hand-written records; on LDS #903,395). The published SVR, in a double entry, call the first wife of Mial Peirce "Joanah Round."
This is not an error in transcription. The compiler has examined the ancient original Swansea Town Clerk's Records, Vol. B, on microfilm (Ibid.). At the top of p. 92, very clearly written, is the entry:
"Miele Peirce and Joanah Round were married November ye 26: 1711." However, the only unaccounted-for daughter of Johnl Round in his Will dated 1710 is "Judeth Round." There is no existing record of any Joanah Round in that period, in any variant spelling of the first name. In the Births section of this Swansea Book B, the records list the wife of Miell/Mial Peirce as "Judith" in recording the births of their two children born there in 1712 and 1714.
Rehoboth records list the wife of Miall Peirce as "Judeth" in recording births of six of their children born in Rehoboth between 1716 and 1726. Under "Peirce" death listings, the RVR state: "Judeth of Mial, in 58th year, 6 Oct. 1744." The evidence indicates that the original listing in Book B of the Swansea records is in error, the writer entering the name as "Joanah" instead of the correct "Judith." A further confusion is introduced by the Pierce Gen., which states that this Mial Peirce "m. Judith Ellis, daughter of Judge Ellis." (p. 58).
Extensive research has not located any records to support this statement. The "Judge Ellis" is not otherwise identified, and this one entry is the only mention of any Ellis in the entire Pierce Gen. Yet there were numerous Round/Pierce intermarriages covering a number of generations, as presented in RVR, SVR and the Pierce Gen.
Mial Peirce was a Deacon in the Baptist Church and his son Nathan was a Pastor of the "Six Principle Baptist Church," the same group which various members of the Round family were promoters of in the same time period. There was obviously a close relationship between the Round family and the Pearce/Pierce family in both Swansea and Rehoboth. Also, the surname "Round" for Miele's wife is written very clearly in the original Swansea records. Nichols, apparently confused by the inconsistency of the JUDITH2 (JOHNl) 39 Swansea vital records and the Will of Johnl Round, attributed a "Johannah Round," who m. a Michael Peirce, as being dau. of John2 Round and Abigail (p. 12).
However, there is no record that John2 had a dau. named Joannah. Nor is there evidence in the Swansea records of any Michael Pierce in that period. The inconsistencies are more logically explained as above. Additional confusion has resulted because there were two Mial Pierces in Swansea, marrying and having children, at about the same time. The other Mial Pierce was son of John PearcePierce (Michael1) and Patience Dobson (Pierce Gen., p. 40). He was b. 24 Sept. 1684 and m. 15 Oct 1719 at Swansea (SVR) Mary Wood. However, he remained in Swansea, whereas the Mial, son of Ephraim and husband of Judith2 Round, mov 12 Nov 2013 by mpierce1

I believe that Michael Pierce was referring to himself, not a son. He was the "abovesaid Michael Peirce." There is no Michael when he states what he bequeaths to each child

Also, I don't believe that there was a Michael Pierce born in 1676. There is no record for this Michael. My theory is that Frederick Clifton Pierce saw that there was a Michael Pierce named in Ephraim Pierce's will, and he did not realize that Myell and Michael were the same person. He placed his birth as 1676, because Ephraim and Hannah's children were born approximately two years apart. FCP showed Ephram Jr as being born in 1674, and Rachel as being born in 1678. So, seeing a four year gap between these two children he added a Michael as being born in 1676.

However, according the the Findagrave for Rachel, she was born around 1675/76. Also, FCP did not know that Ephraim and Hannah had a daughter Elizabeth born, probably, in early 1678. Elizabeth drowned in August 1679. Her age was given as about one and a half years. That precludes another child being born between Rachel and Elizabeth.

As to whether a record showed the name written as Michael or Mial depended on the clerk recording the information. If they spelled phonetically the name would be some version of Mial. At that time Michael was pronounced as Mial. Several of the court records of Captain Michael Pierce have spelling his name as Mihil or Mihell. Both Ephraim and his brother John named a son Michael, and both had their names recorded as Miel or Mial at times. Eventually, Mial became the standard, with the "Michael" spelling disappearing.

"The Origin of English Surnames" by P.H. Reaney states that the name Michael was found as Mihil in 1549, and was also found as Mihell, Myhill, Mial, and Miell.

It seems we are missing the son Michael Pierce who is named in Capt. Michael Pierce-299’s will !!. In this handwritten will on his profile page, Capt Michael Pierce-299 names Michael Pierce as follows:” Also I make my abovesaid wife my executrix and my son Benjamin Pierce abovesaid my executor of my last will and testament, and also I the abovesaid Michael Pierce my truly and will beloved friends Cornett Robert Statson and Isaac…”

But this Michael named in the will could not have been the Michael aka Mial who was the son of Ephraim, Sr. nor could the named Michael be Mial who was the son of Ephraim’s brother John, because neither or those two were born yet at the date Capt Michael’s will was written. There are no other children or grandchildren of Capt. Michael Pierce in any of these profiles who are named Michael who were born before Captain Michael’s will was written Jan 15,1675. It seems we are missing a Michael Pierce.

This profile shows a profile for Michael Pierce-9230 who was born in 1676 (but no reference for that date.) His mother on this profile is listed as Hannah Holbrook Pierce. The profile notes, “Michael was born in 1676. He is the son of Ephraim Pearce and Hannah Holbrook.” Is this Michael Pierce-9230 named in the will of Capt Michael Pierce, a missing son of Capt Michael Pierce-299 and Capt. Michael Pierce-299’s second wife Ann Allen Pierce Unknown-179760 ???? It is difficult to read in the handwritten version of the will whether Capt Michael is referring to himself (in unusual grammar) or a son named Michael.  ???

For disambiguation, you might want to list Michael Pierce with a nickname of Mial or Myall or Miell Pierce. "The will of Ephraim Peirce, Sr. of Warwick, R.I., dated 18 July 1718, bequeathed "to my beloved son, Michael Pierce, Thirty pounds in mony or in bills of Publick Credit and one Cow." This son Michael Pierce is quite clearly the Mial Pierce of Swansea and Rehoboth, Mass. and Warwick, R.I. as is definitely established by the deeds under date of 21 Oct. 1740 and the discussion there given. On 23 Sept. 1719 the inventory of the estate of Ephraim Pierce, Sr., of warwick, R.I. was taken and included, among other things, "to money Due upon bond bareing Date ye second day of Decembr 1719 from Miell Pirce" for £15. This is doubtless his son Mial Pierce. Record Wills #1, Warwick, RI 1703-1745, pp. 151-152." http://www.bushwah.com/names/GardnerCaptMichaelPeirse.pdf

The Peerage has Mial born in 1691/92 as the son of Ephraim Pierce Jr. and Mary Low. He married Judith Round in 1710/11 at Rehoboth, Massachusetts, U.S.A.G. He died in 1786. https://www.thepeerage.com/p32226.htm#i322260

The parents of Mial Pierce (1693-1786) are Ephraim Pierce, Sr. (1651-1719) and Hannah (Holbrook) Pearce (1647-1719), they marrred in 1670, Massachusetts. U.S. and International Marriage Records - 1560-1900, their son was Mial Pierce (1693-1786). His parents are not Epraim Pierce, Jr. and Mary Low, Epraim Pierce, Jr. was his son, not his father. This is not Captain Mial. His son was Captain Mial. Also, someone has mixed up Ephraim, the son of Deacon Mial with Ephraim, the son of Ephraim Jr.
