Biography

Lucretia Rees, or Reese,[1] was of Welsh origin & her marriage records show her name as Lyky REES.

Born about 1710,[2] Lucretia married Methusalem Griffith on 2 February 1730 in Christ Church, Philadelphia.[3] They had six children, including Lucretia Griffith.[4]
They were neighbors of Mary & James Burk/Burke, who had 7 children.
Mathusalem may have been injured in the flood of 1749. He made his Last Will on 11 Sept 1749 and died later that year during the winter (in Augusta County, Virginia).[5]
Between 29 May 1751 & 29 August 1751 in Augusta County, Virginia she married James Edward Burk/Burke - a second marriage for both of them, which resulted in a combined household with 13 children.[1]
Burk's will, dated 4 November 1782 and entered in the February 1783 Court for Surry County, North Carolina, names his wife Lucretia and her daughter Lucretia Wilson.[6]
She died in 1786, Surry County, North Carolina, USA.[3][1]

Research Notes

Birth about 1710, Cumberland, Cumberland, North Carolina, USA[3] - note - first marriage in Pennsylvania argues against a North Carolina birth; the same source had her birth in 1714, Ireland.[3]

Locations: The Griffiths apparently moved from Pennsylvania to Augusta County, Virginia before Mathuselem's 1749 death. They were probably neighbors of the Burks in Virginia, considering her subsequent marriage to Burk, but whether or not they were also neighbors in Pennsylvania is not stated. See Burk's profile for details of that family's locations.

Birth locations of daughters Agnes and Hannah, according to their profiles as of 13 December 2021, are unlikely, with Agnes born 1729 in Virginia and Hannah born in 1735 in Pennsylvania. See their profiles for more information:

Note: Agnes is probably not her child (born before her 1730 marriage).

Children

The following children are listed on her "WeRelate" profile (not considered a reliable source, especially as no sources are listed for her entry - I didn't check the entries for the children listed),[8] but the extensive biography on Jmaes Burk's profile includes support for these being the children of Mathusalem and Lucretia (Rees) Griffith.[9]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lucretia by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lucretia:

Rees-952 and Rees-984 appear to represent the same person because: I revised birth estimate & location for Rees-952 - reading the will of James Burk and the bio for Rees-984, it seems the profiles were intended to represent the same person: Lucretia Rees, whose profile (-984) says she married (1) Methusalem Griffith & (2) James Burk & that she & Methusalem (who died in 1949) were neighbors of Mary & James Burk. Burk's will names wife Lucretia and her daughter Lucretia Wilson.
