Here is another memory from family life the my mother Eunice Nelson told me many times when I was young: My grandmother, Emelia Kline and my mother's older sister, Beatrice, were washing clothes in the wringer washer, when my mother managed to get her hair caught in the wringer. Panic ensued, with my Grandmother first turning off the wringer, and then in confusion turning it back on. Finally, Beatrice, pulled the plug out of the wall, but my mother had a bald spot on he head where the wringer had eaten her hair. A few weeks later, Beatrice was not speaking to my mother, which she did occasionally, knowing it drove my mother crazy. Beatrice was painting a wall in the dining room, so my mother in retaliation for Beatrice ignoring her, brought a dining room chair over and set it down on Beatrice's foot. Then she climbed on the chair and starting jumping up and down on it. Aunt Beatrice did not say a word, but calmly dipped her brush in the paint, wiped it off, and then hit my mother over the head with it. My mother jumped down and went crying to my Grandmother, " Ma, Ma! Beatrice hit me on my bald spot!"

Elsie Litz's note that Amelia golfed is correct. There was a golf course in Mercer on the site of the Mercer High School. My mother has mentioned a sign, "Please replace your divots!" at the golf course, i.e., please put back any sod your golf clubs chuck out of the lawn. Grass is was not easy to grow during the drought in North Dakota! Amelia also hunted. Once, she and her husband, Fred, were out hunting and her gun jammed. As she was trying to unjam it, it went off, and blew her husband's hat off his head.

My mother, Eunice Nelson (nee Kline), says she doesn't think that Grandma Kline could read or write, because she had to stay home and help her mother Louisa Renke, who was a midwife, take care of babies, and go out and assist with births. Grandma Kline was also a midwife. My future Aunt, Joy Kline (nee, Harum), used to write all Grandma Kline's letters for her.
