Biography

Richard Rich was supposedly born in 1605 in England. [1]

" Richard Holyhead Horwich Rich ... was the first of this Rich lineage to settle in America, sometime between 1620-25. ... Richard H. H. Rich was present in Dover Point, New Hampshire by 1625. It appears likely that he arrived in New Hampshire directly from England in one of the emigrant parties organized by Edward Hilton, which settled the Dover Point N.H. area with several shiploads of passengers that sailed from England during 1623 - 1625. Richard H. H. Rich probably did not emigrate to America via the Plymouth Colony or Massachusetts Bay Colony, as his name is not on the known-passenger lists for the Mayflower or the subsequent three Pilgrim ships - the Fortune, the Anne, or the Little James ... which arrived in Massachusetts from England during 1620 - 1623. ... The information about Dover Point settlement during 1623-25 indicates that it involved several ships; passenger lists have apparently never been found, and it seems that early settlement records are not as good as those for Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colony – perhaps because the Dover Point settlers were diverse groups of fishmongers, tradesmen, merchants, and adventurers with fishing and mercantile intentions; they were not like the well-organized groups of Puritans that settled the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colonies." [2]

Richard was married to Sarah York. [3] [4] They are considered by some to be the parents of Richard Rich, who died in October 1692 in Eastham. [5] Said parentage is, however, disputed.

Richard Rich supposedly died in October 1667 in Dover Point, Strafford county, New Hampshire. [6]

Note regarding his Middle Names

Richard RIch is referred to as Richard Holyhead Horwich Rich in the unpublished manuscript The Genealogy of Joan Rich, 730+ Years of an English-American Rich Family Lineage by Dr. Nat Brown. Some Ancestry.com Family Trees (such as this one: Richard Holyhead Horwich Rich ) call him Richard Holyhead Horwich Rich, whilst others (e.g., Richard Rich ) call him simply Richard Rich. It is highly doubtful that the English placenames Holyhead and Horwich truly formed part of Richard Rich's name, if he existed at all.

Bobbie, thankyou for the suggestion. I have detached this profile, as well as Sarah York's profile, as parents from the profile of Richard Rich of Dover Point and Eastham, adding a request at the top of this biography not to reattach them. Thank you for adding the Disputed Parents section to the profile of Richard Rich of Dover Point & Eastham. Cheers!
Albertus, my suggestion would be to keep the profiles for Richard HH Rich and wife intact, with the explanation that they are disputed parents of Richard of Dover Point & Eastham. That way no one will be trying to recreate them again. I would then disconnect them from the son, and we'll add a "Disputed Parents" section to his bio, too. There's another pair of parents wanting to be attached to him as well, that are just as unfounded as this pair. He might someday find his parents, but it doesn't seem he has yet.

Thanks to Bobbie Madison Hall's research into this question, i am now myself convinced that there are no grounds to consider Richard Rich, Senior and Sarah York to be the parents of Richard Rich, Junior. In fact, there seems to be no evidence at all that this Richard Rich, Senior even existed. I have adjusted the Biography and Sources of this profile accordingly. My question to the managers of Richard Rich, Jr.'s Profile would be: shall we (1) proceed to disconnect these disputed parents and let their profiles float, (2) keep them attached with the recent adjustments made by me, or (3) disconnect and put these two profiles to another use? Thank you in advance. Albertus
I believe it is misquoted, Albertus. I've forwarded the first few pages of the article to you. If anyone else would like a copy of the article, all (15 pages!) or in part, please contact me.

Cheers, Bobbie

In February last I found the following source regarding the death date of Richard Rich at Ancestry.com. The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011, Ancestry.com. Text: "Name: Richard Rich; Event Type: Death; Death Date: Oct 1667; Death Place: Dover Point, New Hampshire; Page number: 261; Volume Number: 083." If the information is misquoted, or the page number and volume are incorrect, then it is the fault of Ancestry.com. Richard Rich, Son, died later, so obviously, this does not refer to him.
I have removed the middle names from the biographical section and the biography. They are now only to be found in quotation marks within a quote from Nat Brown's manuscript, and in the Note regarding his Middle Names. I have added a heading stating that Richard Rich and Sarah York are disputed parents of Richard Rich. I should not like, however, to disconnect them at this time. EDIT: As per 8 May 2017 they are disconnected.
Received this from the Rich Family Association: "Many of us have been seeking Richard Rich's ancestry for decades with no definitive proof so far. We're also involved in our Rich DNA project, in which Riches from all over the world are comparing DNA results in an attempt to locate the sources of our various families. By all means, please share any info/proof you might have on Richard Rich and his ancestry." (RFA can be found on Facebook and via their website).

My thoughts: lacking any documented proof, disconnect Richard H.H. Rich from his son, or at the very least, make it clear that he and his spouse are disputed parents.

I've attempted to contact the Rich Family association via their Facebook page to see if they are willing to provide any information to assist.

I went to find the source for the death on this profile, the NEHGR article... Perhaps you'd like to review it too, as I don't find any reference to this man, nor his death date, in the cited article. It says, "Richard Rich, the ancestor of the family which forms the subject of this article, was at Piscataqua (Dover Point), in New Hampshire, 5 Dec. 1667, and at Eastham, on Cape Cod, in 1681." The subject of the article is, in fact, the son Richard. The article, as I read it, does not supply parentage for the son, nor any death date for a supposed father. Interesting.

Thanks for following up, Albertus. If there is no primary document that we can point to which contains the middle names, I would suggest removing them from the primary fields at the top, and refer to them in the bio with the annotated source.
