Biography

Jean Baptiste Rivette Jr., son of Jean Baptiste Rivette and Marie Sylvanie Lalonde, was born on 22 August 1862 in Arnaudville, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, USA.[1][2] He was enumerated during the 1870 census, living with his parents in St. Landry Parish.[3] During the 1880 census, he was boarding in St. Landry Parish in the household of Jacques Audibert, blacksmith, and worked in a blacksmith shop.[4]

Jean Baptiste married Marie Emma Lanclos, daughter of Gerasime Lanclos and Marie Onesima Badeaux, about 19 February 1884 in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish.[5][6]

They had 14 known children:

Jean and Emma were enumerated with their children on a farm in St. Landry Parish, northeast of Bayou Teche, during the 1900 census.[7] Their farm was owned free and clear of a mortgage by 1910. The census reported that they spoke only French, and could both read and write English;[8] however, the 1920 census stated they could not read or write.[9]

By 1930, John and Emma lived in New Orleans in the home of their son, Louis, at 5812 South Front Street. John worked with his two sons as a gardener for a florist.[10]

His wife died in 1933, while they were living at 6217 Tchoupitoulas Street.[11] John has not yet been found in the 1940 census. He died at age 80 on 2 May 1943 in Crowley, Acadia Parish.[12][13][14] He was buried at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church Cemetery in Leonville, St. Landry Parish.[15]

Need to review New Orleans city directory entries from 1920-1943. When did they move there, and when did he leave? Where was he during the 1940 census?
