Reuben was born in 1735 in Surry County, Virginia to Joseph Rogers and Mary Margaret Ferguson. He had at least 10 siblings: John, Joseph, Aaron, Isham, Mary, Sarah, Drury, Michael, and Faith. The book on the Cody Rogers family appears to use information from an authenticated Rogers Family Bible, and records the births, deaths and marriages of the Reuben Rogers family.
His father's will was probated in 1752 in Northampton County, North Carolina. He named the following children: John, Joseph, Aaron, Isom, Reuben, and Faith.
He married Temperance James (parents unknown), in 1767 in North Carolina (bondsman: James Wooten; witness: John Rand). He was about 32 years old. They had at least 14 children together:
1779 - Private in the Georgia Militia under Col. Elijah Clarke.
- Captured by British and held as prisoner of war for six months in Augusta, Georgia.
- He participated in the Battle of Kettle Creek.
- Received bounty land (250 acres) for services in Wilkes County (now Warren County).
Possible Fact: Petition (2 Feb 1784) Petitioned for bounty in Washington County, Certificate of Service in the American Revolution by Col Elijah Clarke (See "Georgia's Roster of the Revolution" by Lucian Lamar Knight, 1920, page 149)
Possible Fact: Residence (1790) Franklin, North Carolina - 2 W M 16 and over; 1 W M under 16; 4 W F (total in household: 7)
Fact: Residence (1791) Collier District, Wilkes County
Fact: Residence (1794) Campbells District, Warren County
Possible Fact: Trustee (18 Dec 1827) Amsden Academy on Williams Creek in Warren County was incorporated, Reuben was a trustee along with Solomon Lockett, Thomas Persons, Joseph Hill, Henry Heath, Jethro Darden, and Edwin Baker. Joseph Leonard Amsden was the principal of the Academy.
Reuben passed away before 1829 in Warren County. He would have been about 94 in 1829 (or 50 years old in 1794, see research notes) . It is not known where he is buried. The Cody Rogers Family book states he was 94 years at the time of his death in 1829.
He may have died intestate as there is a record for an Administrator Bond dated 4 May 1829 for Reuben Rogers, deceased, in the Inferior Court of Warren County, Georgia. John Rogers, administrator, Willis Darden & Henry Hight, are petitioners.
Reuben Rogers has Scottish and English ancestors. He is a descendant of John Rogers (c1617-c1685), who arrived in Jamestown from England on the ship "George" in 1635.
Family Researchers have discrepancies in the location of birth: some say Virginia and others say North Carolina.
- The international marriage record has a birth location of Virginia.
- His father's will was recorded in North Carolina, so that could be where it is presumed he was born.
There are also discrepancies in his DOD. Most agree he died in Warren County, Georgia, but the date of death is either 1794 or 1829.
- There is an administrator bond for Reuben Rogers, dec'd, dated 4 May 1829, petitioned by John Rogers, so it was at least before 1829.
- There is an 1820 census record for Warren County, with 1 W M 45 and over, and 1 W F 26-44. These ages do not match Reuben & Tempie. It is more likely his son.
- DAR records lists his DOD as 1825.
- There are family histories that state he was a Trustee of the Amsden Academy that was incorporated in 1827. It does not designate Sr or Jr, but if he died in 1794 or 1825, it couldn't be Sr.
