James Rorie was the son of William Rorie and Judah Butler. He is named in his father's will and in the will of his sister Ann.[1][2] James was born about 1763 in Halifax County, North Carolina [3]
He first married Suesanna Buxton. They had the following children:[3]
On 6 October 1821 James made a deed of gift of land in Anson County, North Carolina to Levi Meador, husband of James' daughter Sarah.[4]
Following Suesanna's death, James married Keziah Gordon. The records show no children.[3]
At the age of 73 he married a widow, Sarah Duren, and had one child, Louvina.[3]
On 26 May 1838, in Anson County, North Carolina, James signed his will. In his will, he names his wife Sarah,
his children William Rorie, Jemima Dobbs, Lydia Gaddy, Judah Pounds, Absolom Rorie, Sarah Meadors,
his grandchildren James J. Rorie and Judah Rorie, children of William; and James Dobb and Lydia Dobbs, children of Jemima.
James estate was included both real and personal property, including 10 slaves.[5]
Excutors were my trusty friends Durn Osquire and Henry Womble [Wornble?] ; Witnesses were William McCall, Jno. B. Cason, J. White.
James will was proven in Court on January Term 1848 by Joseph White, one of the witnesses.[6]
James died most likely in 1847, in Anson County, North Carolina. He is said to be buried in the family cemetery on the old Rorie plantation, although the marker can no longer be found.[3]
