Jane Sanders (Saunders) Perkins was born on 18 Apr 1832 in Lawton, McNairy, Tennessee, United States, daughter of Lindsey Saunders (1806 - 1865) and Martha Ann (Landreth) Sanders (1810 - 1871). Jennie became a writer and a poet at an early age. Today, she would be considered an early Poet Laurette of McNairy County, Tennessee. She had many poems published in newspapers before and after the Civil War. [1]

Jennie contributed to Marcus J. Wright's book, Reminiscences of the Early Settlement and Early Settlers of McNairy County, Tennessee. page 19, 20. Jennie also enjoys her own sketch in the book on pages 88-89 [8]

Across The Azure Skies, A Collection of Poems by Jenny Sanders Perkins, Collected, Edited, and Annotated by Charles G. Whitlow, is a small booklet of her published poems before the Civil War. [9]
