Will of Arent Schuyler

In the name of God Amen. I Arent Schuyler, of New Barbadoes in the County of Bergen, New Jersey, Gent, "Being in good health and being penitent and sorry from the bottom of my heart for my sins." I leave to my eldest son Philip all that my 1 third part of 1,260 acres of land between Pompton and Peckquaneck which are common between me and Samuel Bayard and the heirs and assigns of Anthom]ny Brockholst, Esq.

i have already provided for my son Casparus by giving him a tract of 500 acres of upland and meadow "at a place formerly called Lessa point but now Wingworth's point , within the bounds of Burlington, by deed dated September 28, 1724. I therfore give him 5 shillingd in full claim to my estate.

I give and devise all that dwelling-house and tract of land where I now live in New Barbadoes and which was sold to me by Edward Kingsland and his wife Mary April 20, 1710 to my son John Schuyler , reserving all mines and minerals. To him and his heirs male, and default of heirs, then to my son Adonijah, and his male heirs, and in default of heirs then to my daughters Eva and Cornelia

I leave and devise, all that the large house and grounds thereto belonging in Elizabethtown, and all that tract of 760 acres near Rahway River and the meadows upon the sound, esteemed 27 acres as the same was conveyed to me by Effingham Townley , December 20, 1720 together with all improvements, to my son Peter Schuyler and to his heirs and in default of heirs then to my son John and his heirs and in default of heirs to my son Adonijah and his heirs and in default then to my daughters Eva and Cornelia.

I give and devise all those tracts and pieces of land at Elizabeth Point, as described in a deed to me from Effingham Townley and wife Sarah, December 20, 1721, wth the large house thereon since built, and also that small piece of land at the point purchased from William Dugdale and John Searle, January 21, 1722 with the house and improvements to my son Adonijah Schuyler and his heirs (same reversions as above.)

I leave to my two daughters Eva and Cornelia, all the dwelling-house in the Broadway in New York, now in poession of Mrs Swift, and to the survivor of them

I leave to my eldest son Philip 25 pounds in full of all claims as heir at law.

I leave to my daughters Eva and Cornelia, to each an Indian slave and 1,000 pounds "current money" at 8 shillings by the ounce" when they are of age or married.

As to the children I may hereafter have , I leave to them same as my other children.

I leave to each of the four children of my late daughter (edit-here he means his daughter Margaret Schuyler who married Charles Oliver) 250 pounds each , when of age or married.

Notwithstnding the instrument executed by my beloved wife, that she would not claim any right in my estate, other than provision made for her before marriage, direct that she shall have and enjoy the use of my chariot and two of my best horses I shall have, and the choice of my femae slaves. And if she think proper she shall remain and live in my house where i now live, and be maintained out of my estate so long as she remains a widow.

I leave all the slaves and household goods on the farm where I now live to my son John and the rest to my sons John, (?) Peter and Adonijah.

My executors are to have full power to operate all mines on my estate, and the profits to be for my sons. I make my son John and John Walter , merchant of New York, executors

Dated December 17, 1724. Witnesses William Beekman, Jacob Goelet, Jacob Murray.

Codicil confirms the above will and leaves to his son Casparus 50 pounds annually, and to his wife Mary Schuyler (third wfe) 2,500 pounds in addition to the 1,500 pounds formerly agreed to be given. To daughters Eva and Cornelia 3,000 pounds and also a house in the Smith's Vly in New York with the land. To my grand-son Arent Schyler, son of my son Philip 1,000 pounds. The testator states that he then had far more money than he had when his will was made.

Dated October 30, 1730 Witnesses John Cooper, J Rowzet, John Cooke--Proved February 2, 1730/1

It is noted here in Abstacts of Wills the following "The daughter Oliver mentioned was his daughter Margaret wife of Charles Oliver who died in 1719. Also the house on Broadway left to his two daughters is now No 109 Broadway. The house in Smith's Vly, New York is now No 133 Pearl Street --W.S.P.

The note above clarifies why some historians felt there was a daughter Olivia but such was not the case.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Arent by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Arent:

I have posted the will of Maria Varleth Teller on her memorial on FindAGrave which shows that MARIA is the MOTHER of Jenneke Teller Schuyler NOT Margaret Duncanson. In Maria/Mary’s will she states that she is leaving money to her deceased youngest DAUGHTER Jenneke (Janekie......) Schuyler’s children and names Arent Schuyler her SON-IN-LAW as a possible executor. Please check the will there to correct this commonly made mistake. It would help us all to correct this, so that others do not trace the Duncanson lineage as their own.

I’m happy to correspond with those interested in the Schuylers as I have researched them for over 60 years and am a direct descendant of Pieter Tjercks and Philip Pieterse Schuyler and have taken an Ancestry DNA test.

As another note—Arent Schuyler was not Arent Francis Schuyler. He has been mistakenly listed that way in the past when some historians recorded the fact that he was a freeholder (Francis means freeholder) in NewYork City when he moved there. His name as you have it recorded is Arent Philipse Schuyler but he was never called Arent Francis Schuyler nor was that his nickname. He was Arent Philipse Schuyler because he was the son of Philip Pieterse Schuyler—Patronomyics. My husband and I have posted many documents on the Schuyler memorials on FindAGrave which I hope will be helpful to other genealogists and family members. My personal lineage is also recorded there.

Wishing all you descendants a healthier year.

I approved the merge for Van Schuyler-2 and Schuyler-32, however there seem to be some issues with Schuyler-32, such as 2 separate records for marriage to Jannetje, and double middle name Philipse.

I'm also uncertain on the lack of "van" in this version, or the inclusion of the title "captain"

Van Schuyler-2 and Schuyler-32 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, dates, even the painting. Final profile should be Schuyler-32.

Schuyler-182 and Schuyler-32 appear to represent the same person because: According to the patronymic naming system, Philipse would be the correct second name. Arent was the Dutch form of Francis which is why you often see his name given as Arent OR Francis Schuyler in records. It would probably be more fitting to enter Francis in the nickname field.
