Biography

Mary was born in 1770 or 1772. She passed away in 1853.

Research Note

Mary's year of birth seems to be unclear. Her gravestone, and the corresponding FindAGrave memorial has her birth as 1770. This is suspicious as her supposedly younger sister was born 4 months later according to FindAGrave records. Correspondence with others suggests that Mary's birth year should be 1772 but this author has seen no source. If someone else has such a source, please add it here and confirm the date.

Likewise the FindAGrave memorial claims her birth was in Rockingham county Virginia. Rockingham county didn't existing in 1772 - it was founded in 1778. Again a legitimate source for the birth location is desired.

Her married name is transcribed as "Garland" in the pension application filed on behalf of the children of her stepmother:[1]

"Catherine died in Russellville Alabama on the 2nd day of October 1836, that at the time of her death she left the following named children & stepchildren to wit Geo. W. Sevier, Samuel Sevier, Robert Sevier, Elizabeth McClelland, Mary Overstreet & Mary Ann Garland, a stepchild, all of whom have since died except Robert Sevier & Elizabeth McClelland" (from testimony given on 14 September 1855).[1]
