Biography

NOTE : Ulrich should not be confused with Ulrich Sollenberger who died in Tulpehocken, Berk, PA c.1767

Birth and parents : Ulrich is reported in an unsourced Findagrave entry to have been born on 3 Jan 1690 in Bern, Switzerland.[1]

Immigration : Ulrich may have been the man who arrived in Philadelphia on 30 Sep 1727 with wife and child aboard the Molly.[2][3] One source reports that he came "from the southern part of Germany in 1726.[4] Another suggests that he emigrated in 1770, but this date is assumed to be in error given the subsequent account of his descendants.[5]

Marriage and children: Ulrich's widow is named as Maria in an indenture dated 1767,[6] and she is reported as having "lately died" in a deed dated 1772.[7] Ulrich was the father of :

  1. John [6][8][9] (1711-1793) m. Barbara [10] Cable [3]
  2. Magdalene m. Peter Witmer [3][6][10]
  3. Jacob [6][8][9][10] d.1812 m. (1) Magdalene [LNU] (2) Anna [LNU] [3]
  4. Maria m. John Witmer [3][6][8][9][10]
  5. Ulrich d. bef. 1774 [3][6][10]
  6. Catherine m. Martin Bosh / Beach [3][6][8][9][10]
  7. Henry [6][7][10]
  8. Barbara [6][10]
  9. Ann [6][10] m. John Smith [3]

Land records : Ulrich patented a 180-acre tract of land in Hempfield Twp on 17 Sep 1746.[10] He later warranted 30 acres of land in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster, PA in October 1750, adjoining lands he already held. The land was returned in 1761.[11]

Death and burial : Ulrich is reported to have died in Hempfield Twp on 3 Feb 1758.[1] (It is unclear who the land in Hempfield Twp was then returned to.)

A deed dated 1767 records that Ulrich's estate, comprising a "messuage, grist mill, saw mill, plantation and tract of land in Hempfield Twp", was valued at 12,000 pounds. Two thirds of the estate was divided between Ulrich's children, named as John, Jacob, Maria (wife of John Witmer), Catharine (wife of Martin Besh), Magdalena (deceased, wife of Peter Witmer), Henry, Barbara, and Anna, and their heirs. The remaining third was left in the hands of Ulrich's oldest son, John, to be used to support Ulrich's widow, Maria.[6][7][9][10]

Research Notes

Birth : No evidence is provided to confirm that Ulrich was born in 1690 in Bern. One source suggests that he came from Canton Uri in Switzerland.[12] His children Henry, Barbara and Anna were still minors at the time of Ulrich's death (assumed to be c.1765) and may have been born between about 1745 and 1750; the other six children were evidently over the age of 21 and were likely to have been born between about 1730 and 1745. Ulrich might thus be expected to have been born c.1705.

Marriage : An unsourced "Shellenberger Chart" records that Ulrich married (1st) c.1720 Catherine Barbara Dorothea Strickler (1701-1768) and (2nd) Maria Strickler (1690-1758).[3] This account is questionable since the dates conflict (his first wife is reported to have died 10 years after his second wife). The Shellenberger chart appears to have been inaccurate in detailing other family members (see Children following), and can not be relied upon.

Children : The "Shellenberger chart" referenced by the Lancaster Mennonite Vital records lists three other children, but since they do not appear in any of the deeds pertaining to Ulrich's estate, it would appear that they have been identified in error :

  1. Isaac m. Matilda Strickler [3]
  2. Samuel [3]
  3. Maria m. [FNU] Burch [3]

Shallenberger-90 and Schallenberger-8 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death dates, both reported to have been the father of a son named John (c.1711-c.1793, dates are estimates only). No baptism record located to confirm LNAB but Schallenberger is likely to have been closest to original German spelling.

I am not sure about that Abraham that is currently set as the father, either. I was working on the presumption that this page might be right: https://www.geni.com/people/Johannes-Schallenberger-Sr/6000000014303642904

I received permission to add Ulrich as the son of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Schallenberger-13

Should this go to G2G for additional input/sources? jan

There are no sources provided at the moment to confirm Ulrich as the child either of Abraham Schallenberger-9 or of Hans Schallenberger-13. I suspect Abraham is wrong, but I'd be reluctant to assume that Hans is correct.
