David Skeels Jr. was born 5 Dec 1779 in Lanesborough, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He was the son of David Skeels (1746-1833) and Lydia Powell (1754-1827). [1]
Marriage
He arrived in Highgate with his parents, fiancee Martha Greene and brothers, Amos and William in 1803-4. David married Martha in 1804 in Highgate.
Children
David and Martha had 11 children, all born in Highgate.
Occupation
David was a blacksmith and manufactured edged tools. From Vermont History: "Three Puzzles of 1830”, p.147 - When David Skeels jumped axes for anyone, the charge was a dollar a jump, but Conrad Saxe would jump them for fifty cents each. Both men had forges and it seems clear that jumping" was a technical name for some process relating to forging.[2]
David died 12 Apr 1854 (aged 74) in Highgate Falls, Franklin County, Vermont, and is buried in Highgate Falls Episcopal Church Cemetery, Highgate Falls, Franklin County, Vermont. [4][5]
