Biography

Capt. Thomas Skolfield Jr., Master mariner & Ship Builder was born in 1744.[1] Thomas inherited land on Mere Point, Brunswick, from his uncle, John Orr, in 1771. He built several vessels, which he undoubtedly employed in coastwise trade.

Capt. Thomas married Anne Ann Anderson in North Yarmouth, Cumberland Co. on Jan. 30,1772.[2] They had the following children:

  1. Thomas Skolfield
  2. Richard Skolfield
  3. Jacob Skolfield born 23 May 1780; died 30 May 1860; married Hannah Stanwood.
  4. Sarah Skolfield born 30 November 1790; died Feb. 6,1875.
  5. Ebenezer Skolfield born 13 April 1792; died 16 August 1794; married Lavina Stanwood.

Brunswick's validations for 1791 reveals that Thomas had a 30 ton sloop. Other accounts mentions supplies needed for shipbuilding. Thomas was still active sailing in 1805, when he celebrated that William King paid him $4.00 for freighting the bell for Bath's South Meeting House and $1.40 for a barrel of cider. A report of vessels in Brunswick , dated July 13,1814 and sent to William King, states that a schooner of (140 Tons) was on the stocks at Skolfield's in 1816. Thomas was the registered master carpenter of the brig Edward (132.18/95 tons) which he built for a New Haven owner. Thomas a son of Jacob, a master carpenter by 1815, probably worked with his father on other vessels!

Thomas died in 1826.[3]
