Biography

William Smith was born on 12 September 1862 at Boundary, Leicestershire, England. Son of Joseph Smith and Caroline or Catherine Lunn.[1]

The exact location of the family residence is unclear as Boundary is on the border of Derbyshire and Leicestershire and the nearest town/village used in the censuses varies. The family may also have moved around the area. William's mother uses both Catherine and Caroline throughout her life adding to the confusion.

On 2 April 1871 William is a scholar living with his parents & siblings in Hartshorne, Derbyshire.[2] In the 1881 census they are shown in Swadlincote, Derbyshire[3] where William is now working as a Joiner - the trade he retains all through his life.[4]

At some point between the 1881 census and his 1889 marriage, William appears to have been married and widowed. He declares himself a "widower" when he married Minnie. 1st wife has been identified - details to follow Wilkins-1208 10:39, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

In 1889, William is living in Woodville, Derbyshire when he married Minnie Mackellow at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in the nearby town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.[5][6]"A pretty little wedding was celebrated at the Wesleyan Chapel on Monday morning, the Bridegroom being Mr William Smith, of Woodville and the bride Miss Minnie Mackellow, daughter of John Mackellow, cabinet maker, of Ashby." [7]

William and Minnie set up home in William's (and his late first wife's) home village of Boundary,[8][9] where eight of their nine surviving children are born. They moved to Overseal, Derbyshire between 1905 and 1907. The 1911 census shows them living in Stanleigh Road in the village with 8 of their children.[10]

Joseph Meldron (Joe), Clara, John William (Jack), Lucy Evelyn, Agnes Hilda, Thomas Hilton (Hilt), Charlotte Ellen (Lottie), Florence Mabel (Flo), Dorothy May (Dot) & Bertha Ann.

William Smith died of Congestive Heart Failure on 7 August 1940 at his home in Overseal.[11] He is buried in St Matthews Churchyard, Overseal where Minnie[12]and two of their children Joe and Dot join him
