Research Notes

There is a Mary Kelly on the 1840 Census in Washington County, Virginia, heading a household of four women, which suggests she was a widow. The house includes one woman, age 80-90 (which could be Mary), 2, ages 30-40, 1, 20-30, and 2, 15-20. Mary is listed between John M. Kelly and James Kelly, which could be her sons.[6]

A Little History of the Smyths by Mrs. P.A. Scott (1919) Includes Mary Smyth Kelly Written July 6, 1891 for Rachel Ann Scott, by her father, James K. Smyth. "Ezekiel Kelly's wife, Mary Smyth Kelly, who became my great grandmother, was married at the age of fourteen and died at the age of ninety-six."
