John Edgar Spence, the son of John Small Spence and Elizabeth Johnston, was born 29 Jun 1885. He served in the militia as a young man and was chosen to represent the 36th Peel Infantry Regiment at the Coronation of King George V in 1911. he was commissioned lieutenant in 1914, but was rejected for service abroad in 1914-1918. In 1916, he was a teacher in Graham Hill, Saskatchewan. He returned to his parents' farm by 1921, and farmed there until 1946. John was elected member of Amaranth Township Council 1942-1945 and was deputy reeve on that council in 1846. He died 31 Oct 1962 and was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Orangeville, Ontario.
